SEATTLE – The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 road victory over Seattle at SU Tennis Courts on Wednesday as the Titans continue their historic season.
Now 15-3 on the year, Fullerton has matched its best single-season win total from the 1988 campaign, as one more victory would set the all-time program record.
The Titans will be back in action at 11 a.m., Saturday to host UC Irvine at Titan Tennis Courts in Big West Conference action. Admission is free of charge. Fullerton is currently tied at the top of the league standings with an undefeated 4-0 record.
For the 14th time this season, Cal State Fullerton won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
At No. 3 doubles, freshman Sarah Nuno and sophomore Danielle Pham got Fullerton off to the right start with a 6-1 win over Sari Kwee and Kristen James as the Titan pair is now 11-4 on the year.
The doubles point was clinched as the freshmen pair of Masako Makiba and Karla Portalatin defeated Madison Maloney and Barbara Carey, 6-1, at No. 2 in the doubles order, improving their record to 8-4.
The Fullerton lead improved to 2-0 as Portalatin – on a six-match win streak – dispatched Carey, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 3 in the lineup.
Camille De Leon gave Fullerton a 3-0 advantage with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kwee, at No. 4 in the order.
After a loss at No. 2 in singles play, the Titans captured the fourth and match-clinching point as junior and co-captain Alexis Valenzuela earned her 13th victory of the year, moving past Michelle Lui in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
Pham (12-4) defeated Kailyn Skjonsby, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6 in the lineup, while the sixth and final point was scored as Makiba edged James, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 5 in the order.
Cal State Fullerton will play its next four matches against Big West Conference opponents beginning with UC Irvine at 11 a.m., Saturday, at Titan Tennis Courts.
