Titans Remain Unbeaten in Big West Play

FULLERTON, Calif.  – The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team remained undefeated in Big West Conference play producing a 5-2 victory over CSUN at Titan Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.

 

The Titans (14-3, 4-0 BWC) are currently tied at the top of the league standings with Long Beach State, while Fullerton's 14 overall wins are the most for the program since the 1988 season (15-11). In addition, CSF's four league wins are the most for the program since 2013.

 

With the win, the Titans also defeated the Matadors (7-9, 2-2 BWC) for just the second time since the 2000 season.

 

For the 13th time this year, Fullerton started singles play with a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point.

 

After CSUN took the first match at No. 3 in the order, Fullerton's tandem of Masako Makiba and Karla Portalatin evened the score with a 7-5 win over Skyla Alcon and Vivian Lin at No. 2 doubles.

 

Fullerton's top team of Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela won its fourth in a row and improved to 11-1 on the season with a 7-5 defeat of Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei as the Titans clinched the doubles point.

 

Sarah Nuno helped Fullerton to a 2-0 lead as the freshman dispatched Lin, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 in the singles order to win her fifth straight and improve to 12-5 on the season.

 

Danielle Pham's 6-3, 6-3 victory over Mari Taslagyan at the bottom of the order pushed the Titans to a 3-0 advantage as the sophomore won her 11th singles match of the year.

 

CSUN scored its first point with a victory at No.5 in the lineup, but the Titans clinched the match scoring its fourth point as Portalatin dispatched Alcon, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 in the order. Portalatin is on a five-match win streak and is 13-4 in singles play this spring.

 

Valenzuela recorded the Titans fifth point with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Hsu at the top of the lineup. She has won three in a row and is 12-3 in 2016.

 

The Titans will conclude the month of March at Seattle on Wednesday before returning to Titan Tennis Courts on Saturday, April 2, to host UC Irvine at 11 a.m.
