Makiba Named Big West Athlete of the Week

IRVINE, Calif. – Freshman Masako Makiba was voted the Big West Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after leading the Titans to a 2-0 record last week as Cal State Fullerton won its Big West Conference opener for the first time since 1995 and also extended its winning streak to four.

Makiba helped the Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team to a pair of wins over the weekend as the native of Matsumoto City, Nagano, Japan, went undefeated in both singles (2-0) and doubles action (2-0).

The Titans earned a 5-2 victory at Pacific on Friday before winning their Big West Conference opener at UC Davis, 4-3. Fullerton (6-1) is off to its best start on record which dates back to 1981.

It was Makiba's 7-5, 6-4 victory over UCD's Tiffany Pham that scored the fourth and match-deciding point for the Titans against the Aggies.

Makiba also outlasted Pacific's Sabrina Rodriguez, 7-6 (4), 6-4, helping fuel a 5-2 victory.  With partner Karla Portalatin, she also won both of her doubles matches.

On the year, Makiba is 4-3 in singles action and 4-2 in doubles play.

This is Fullerton's second Athlete of the Week Award in 2016 and the first for Makiba during her Titan career.

The Titans return to action at UC Riverside on Saturday.

Others nominated: Maeva Razakasoa (Long Beach State); Jessie Lee (UC Davis); Sarah Gong (UC Irvine); Amanda Atanasson (UC Santa Barbara); Sarah Gealer (Hawai'i)
