The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team is off to its best start in over 20 years after producing a 6-1 victory over 14th-ranked (Div. II) Azusa Pacific on Wednesday afternoon at Titan Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Titans are now 3-1 on the year, the best record for Fullerton after the first four matches of the season since 1995. The Cougars (0-1) are ranked 14th in the country by the 2015-16 Oracle/ITA Collegiate NCAA Women's Tennis Division II Rankings.
Fullerton won the doubles point as the team of freshman Sarah Nuno and sophomore Danielle Pham earned a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot over Valeriia Kashina and Jackie Resler of APU. Junior co-captains Alexis Valenzuela and Camille De Leon then clinched the doubles point for Fullerton with a 6-3 score against the Cougars' team of Natalie Johnson and Lisa Schneider. The team of De Leon and Valenzuela is 2-0 this season.
In singles action, Valenzuela remained undefeated with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Johnson, who is rated ranked 16th in the country by the 2015-16 Oracle/ITA Collegiate NCAA Women's Tennis Division II Singles Rankings. Valenzuela is 4-0 at the top of the lineup in 2016.
De Leon picked up her third win of the season with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Schneider at No. 2 in the order.
Masako Makiba's 6-4, 6-1 victory over Azusa Pacific's Kara Hinton clinched Fullerton's win at No. 5 in the lineup.
Freshman Karla Portalatin also remains undefeated at 4-0 after piecing together a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kashina at No. 4 in the lineup.
Nuno, currently 2-2 in her rookie campaign, defeated Lilit Varganyan, 6-4, 6-0.
Fullerton returns to action at 10:00 a.m., Saturday at Loyola Marymount.
