SAN DIEGO – The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team split its singles matches at San Diego, but dropping the doubles point at the start proved to be the difference in the Titans' 4-3 loss to the Toreros at Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
USD's (2-0) team of Colomba DiFilippo and Maria Torres Draxl defeated the Fullerton (2-1) pair of freshman Sarah Nuno and sophomore Danielle Pham, 6-3. The Toreros clinched the match-deciding doubles point as the team of Shani Blecher and Marta Stojanovic scored a 6-3 victory over CSF freshmen Masako Makiba and Karla Portalatin.
In singles action, Fullerton junior and co-captain Alexis Valenzuela improved to 3-0 on the year with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Stojanovic at the top of the lineup.
Portalatin, also still undefeated in singles action at 3-0, edged Torres Draxl, 6-3, 6-2, at the fourth spot in the lineup.
Makiba was the third Titan to score a singles victory as Blecher retired in third set at No. 5.
Cal State Fullerton will return to action hosting Azusa Pacific at Titan Tennis Courts, Wednesday, Feb., with the match scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
