FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team swept the doubles point and went on to win five singles matches as the Titans opened their season with a 6-1 victory over UC San Diego on Wednesday afternoon at Titan Tennis Courts.

The Tritons (0-1) are currently rated 18th in the country by the 2015-16 Oracle/ITA Collegiate NCAA Women's Tennis Division II Rankings.

In doubles action, the team of junior Camille De Leon and freshman Sarah Nuno defeated 16th-ranked Britta Mosser and Kyra Scott, 7-5, at the top of the lineup to secure the doubles point.

Junior Alexis Valenzuela and sophomore Danielle Pham also won at doubles, 6-0, at No. 2 in the lineup, while the freshman pair of Masako Makiba and Karla Portalatin won the third and final match, 7-6 (4).

Playing at the top of the singles lineup, Valenzuela recorded a three-set, 6-0, 3-6, 10-5 win over Scott, currently ranked 28th in the 2015-16 Oracle/ITA Collegiate NCAA Women's Tennis Division II Singles Rankings.The win marked the 30th dual singles victory of Valenzuela's career.

Nuno picked up her first career singles win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 2 in the lineup over UCSD's Jasmine Hosseini.

De Leon, a co-captain on the 2016 squad, pushed past Mosser, 6-1, 6-4. Portalatin won the first singles match of the day with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Ashley Chao.

At No. 6 in the lineup, Pham defeated Shannon Theisen, 6-4, 6-2.

The Titans return to action this weekend at San Diego State (Saturday) and San Diego (Sunday). Fullerton returns home on Wednesday, Feb. 3, to host Azusa Pacific at 1:30 p.m. at Titan Tennis Courts.

Notes: Dating back to 1981, Cal State Fullerton boasts a record of 9-24 in season openers (records are missing for 1983, 1997 and 2000). The Titans are 6-10 at home in season openers and have won two straight season openers.
