Women’s Tennis Travels to Northridge

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's tennis team will conclude its fall competition on Friday, participating in the Matador Collegiate Invitational.

Hosted by Cal State Northridge, the competition runs Friday through Sunday and includes doubles and singles action.

TITANS AT THE UST/ITA SOUTHWEST REGIONALS

Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela were victorious on the final day of action in San Diego on Oct. 19.

De Leon, competing in the round robin of the Lucky Loser III bracket, defeated UC Irvine's Brooke Schweyer, 6-4, 7-6.

Valenzuela, also competing in the round robin of the Lucky Loser III bracket, edged UC Santa Barbara's April Scatliffe, 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles action, De Leon and Jessica Pepa, lost to the No. 7 seeded team of Matea Cutura and Ale Granillo of Pepperdine, 8-3, in the round 16.

In the doubles Lucky Loser bracket, Megan Sandford and Valenzuela defeated Eleanor Grossman and Jessica Perez of Loyola Marymount, 8-6.

FRESHMAN ON A ROLL

Freshman Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela are leading the Titans in singles matches with five wins apiece. Valenzela, winner of three straight singles matches, and partner redshirt junior Megan Sandford, are 2-1 in doubles play, winning consecutive matches.

TITANS AT THE BEACH TENNIS FALL INVIATIONAL

Camille De Leon claimed the Flight B consolation championship with a win at the 2013 Beach Tennis Fall Invitational held at the Rhodes Tennis Center in Long Beach, Calif. on Oct. 6.

De Leon defeated Southern Utah's Jane Marushko, 6-2, 2-6, 10-8, to claim the consolation title in Flight B.

The team of Morgan McIntosh and Kalika Slevcove defeated Kristen Poei and Scout Shutter of Cal State Northridge, 8-4 on the final day of competition.

A LOOK BACK AT THE 2013 TITANS

Fullerton will return to the court after completing one of its most successful seasons in recent history. The Titans finished the year with 11 wins – the most for the program since 2004.

In addition, Fullerton's four league victories in 2013 represented CSF's highest total since the Big West began round-robin play in 2006. 

ABOUT COACH MATIAS

First year head coach Dianne Matias, who is the fifth Fullerton women's tennis head coach since 1984, is remaining in the Big West Conference after serving as an assistant on UC Irvine's staff during the 2013 season.

The head coaching opportunity will be the second for Matias, who served as Maryland's head coach for the 2011-12 campaign. She spent the previous two seasons as the Terrapins' assistant coach.

During her time at Maryland, Matias brought in the 23rd ranked recruiting class according to TennisRecruiting.net. In addition, Maryland's top singles player reached the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament, while the doubles pair also qualified for postseason play.
