IRVINE, Calif. - It was announced by the conference on Monday that Myka Sutherlin was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week for the thirteenth week of the 2023 softball season.
It was the seventh time Sutherlin has earned the award this season, the tenth honor of her career as a Titan, and the tenth honor overall for the Titans this season. Sutherlin set a new Big West record with her 5th consecutive pitcher of the award. Meredith Cervenka of Long Beach State held the previous record of four straight pitcher of the week awards in 2003. If Sutherlin can win one more award next week, she will tie the Big West record of eight pitcher of the week awards in a single season set by Brooke Turner of Long Beach State in 2008.
Sutherlin started two games this weekend against the University of Hawaii. She pitched 13.1 innings and allowed zero runs, five hits, 1 walk, and struck out 20 batters. In the first game against Hawaii, Sutherlin won a pitchers duel against Hawaii ace Brianna Lopez. Sutherlin tossed a complete game shutout and allowed one hit, one walk, and struck out 13. In the second game, Sutherlin had a combined shutout after going 6.1 innings. Sutherlin was subbed out after striking out a batter to start the seventh inning so she could wave goodbye to the home crowd for one final time. She allowed four hits, zero walks, and struck out seven. Sutherlin has won her last 10 games in a row. During that stretch she has allowed one earned run in 64 innings and has a 80-to-14 strikeout to walk ratio.
The Titans head to Long Beach State for the final week of the regular season. The Titans will play Long Beach State on Friday in a nationally televised game on ESPNU on Friday at 7:00 PM. They will play the Beach in a doubleheader at 1:00/3:00 pm on Saturday to conclude the series. The Titans have a two-game lead over the Beach heading into the weekend and just need to win one game to clinch the Big West title.
