Sutherlin and Hill named Big West Player of the Week

IRVINE, Calif. - It was announced by the conference on Monday that Myka Sutherlin was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week and Deshea Hill was named the Field Player for the eleventh week of the 2023 softball season.

It was the fifth time Sutherlin has earned the award this season, the eighth honor of her career as a Titan, and the seventh honor overall for the Titans this season.  Sutherlin has three peated as the Pitcher of the Week during the last three weeks.  

Sutherlin started two games this weekend against the top hitting squad in the Big West, the Gauchos.  Sutherlin pitched 13 innings and allowed just one run, five hits, six walks, and struck out 18. In the first game, Sutherlin matched a career-high with 14 strikeouts.  She struck out at least one batter every inning and struck out the side three different times. Sutherlin allowed her first run in 29.2 innings after allowing the Gauchos to score in the sixth inning of Friday's game.  During her last six starts, Sutherlin has allowed one run in 36.2 innings and has a 49-to-10 strikeout to walk ratio.  

Deshea Hill earned the Field Player of the Week honor for the first time this season.  Hill had earned Player of the Week honors twice previously as a freshman in 2018.  It was the eighth honor overall for the Titans for the 2023 season. 

Hill slashed .857/.800/1.857 for the weekend.  She went 6-for-7 from the dish and also had two walks and one sac fly in her 10 plate appearances.  She had 7 RBIs and one home run for the weekend.  Five of her hits against the Gauchos were extra base hits (4 doubles, 1 homerun).  She had 3 RBIs in the first game, 3 RBIs in the second game, and 1 RBI in the final game. Hill has at least one RBI in her last six games and has 12 RBIs within that span.

The Titans head to San Luis Obispo this weekend to take on Cal Poly.  The Titans will play a doubleheader on Friday with the first game beginning at 4:00 PM.  The series will conclude on Saturday with a single game at 1:00 pm.
