FULLERTON, Calif. - The softball team got their fall schedule started with a 14-6 win over Concordia University - Irvine on Friday night. The two teams played nine innings of ball at Anderson Family Field getting an extra two innings of work.
It was a slow start for the Titans trailing 3-0 through the first five innings, but then the bats came alive with four runs in the sixth, seven in the seventh, and three more in the ninth inning.
Sophomore Janelle Rodriguez led the offense going 3-4 with a home run and five RBI. The dinger was a three-run shot in the bottom of the seventh. Fellow sophomore Sam Kennedy went 2-4 with a pair of RBI, while senior Ari Williams also came through with a two-hit game going 2-4 with a triple.
Some of the new faces for the Fullerton squad also had nice nights at the plate. Freshman Alexa Neil was slotted in the leadoff spot and was the only newcomer to be in the starting lineup. She reached base three times going 2-4 with a walk. Freshman Paola Villegas entered the game around the halfway mark and went a perfect 2-2 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Junior transfer Jamie Sugimoto logged a 1-3 night with a double and two RBI.
On the pitching side of things, the Titans had three arms go on Friday night. Redshirt senior Trish Parks through the first three innings giving up three runs (two earned) and striking out four. Junior Sophie Frost came in for the next three innings and only surrendered two baserunners striking out a pair of Eagles. Freshman Mia Marinakis closed out the final three frames allowing three runs striking out one in the outing.
The next gameday for the Titans will be a double-header on Friday, October 26 starting at 5:00 p.m.
