SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team played a pair of games that ended in 3-2 finals on Saturday at the Santa Clara Bronco Classic. In game one, the Titans edged Seattle in a walk-off victory before dropping a 10-inning barnburner to Idaho State in the nightcap.

With the split, Cal State Fullerton moves to 6-2 on the year, while Seattle falls to 2-5 and Idaho State improves to 2-6.

Game 1: Cal State Fullerton 3, Seattle 2
The Titans and the Redhawks were in a battle throughout as the game remained scoreless for the first four innings. Both pitchers, Sydney Golden (4-0) and Lindsay Davis did a good job of retiring the opposition.

Davis pitched 4.0 innings of work without allowing a run and giving up five hits, while striking out one and walking one. She made way for Alyssa Reuble in the fifth inning and Cal State Fullerton quickly jumped on the board.

With one out in the fifth, Samantha Vandiver singled up the middle and moved to third on a double by Missy Taukeiaho. Courtney Rodriguez came up and drove in the first run of the game on an infield single to short to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.

Cal State Fullerton added another run in the sixth after Melissa Sechrest led off the inning with a single up the middle. She advanced to second on a fielder's choice and moved to third on an error before scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Delynn Rippy.

With a 2-0 lead, Golden continued to shutdown the Seattle hitters. She took a shutout into the seventh inning before allowing a two-out single up the middle to Molly Campbell, marking the first base hit allowed since the fifth. With two outs and the tying run at the plate, Rose Saenz belted a game-tying home run to left field. Unfazed, the well-composed freshman struck out pinch hitter Marcella Kay to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Seattle made a pitching change and brought in Andie Larkins (2-2). Fullerton's Sarah Moore drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single through the left side by Sechrest. After a fly out and a walk, the Titans had bases loaded and two outs when Alexis Gonzalez ripped an RBI-single back up the middle to give Cal State Fullerton the walk-off victory.

Golden earned the win, her fourth in as many appearances. She pitched her second complete game while allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Vandiver finished the game batting 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Sechrest also went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Gonzalez concluded the game 1-for-1 with one RBI.

Game 2: Idaho State 3, Cal State Fullerton 2 (10 innings)
In the second game of the day, the Titans sent senior left-hander Desiree Ybarra (1-2) to the hill to go up against the Bengals' Ashlyn Ames (1-3). 

Ybarra gave up two early runs in the first and second before pitching shutout softball for the next seven innings.

In the top of the seventh, trailing 2-0, Vandiver sent a one-out single through the right side to keep the Titans' hopes alive. Taukeiaho followed with a walk and Rodriguez loaded the bases with a single up the middle. Moore gave the Titans' their first run on a sacrifice fly to leftfield as the score moved to 2-1 in favor of Idaho State.

With two outs and runners on second and third after a wild pitch, Sechrest singled back up the middle to even the score at 2-2.

After Ybarra got out of the bottom of the seventh unscathed, the game moved into extra innings. However, the two teams would need another two innings before another run would cross the plate.

The starters both went the distance and Ybarra was the hard-luck loser after Kacie Burnett, who began the inning on second due to the international tie-breaker rule, came around to score on a passed ball.

Ybarra suffered the loss after pitching 9.1 innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits, while striking out nine and walking four.

Ames earned the win after pitching 10.0 innings of work and allowing two runs on 10 hits and walking four.

Cal State Fullerton looks to get back on the winning track against Seattle and Santa Clara Sunday, Feb. 21 on the final day of the Bronco Classic. The game versus the Redhawks is set for 11:15 a.m., and the contest against Santa Clara will follow at approximately 1:30 p.m.
