FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton's softball team produced three home runs and a six-run fourth inning to outlast Grand Canyon, 9-7, at Anderson Family Field on Wednesday evening.
Junior Eliza Crawford led the Titans with the go-ahead two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Titans a 9-7 lead in the sixth that proved to be the game winner. Crawford produced a 3-for-4 outing at the plate to go along with one run scored and four RBI.
University of Washington transfer Missy Taukeiaho also contributed in a big way launching her fifth round-tripper of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning to conclude with a 2-for-3 evening scoring all three at bats from the lead off position.
In a game that featured three Titans pitchers, sophomore Monique Wesley (1-0) tossed 1 and 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up her first win of the season. Wesley yielded two hits while fanning two Antelopes and aiding in CSF's two-game winning streak heading into the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton starter Jasmine Antunez lasted 2 and 1/3 innings while surrendering three earned runs as her season ERA ballooned to (3.85). Freshman Christina Washington entered in relief to post 3 innings of work, yielding three runs on three hits over that span.
After trailing 4-1 through three innings, the Titans offense finally clicked in the fourth inning as they struck for a season-high six runs. Melissa Sechrest led off the inning with a looping double down the left field line. Soon after, Lauren Mario took a 2-2 pitch and deposited it well over the left center field wall. Last night's walk-off hero Paige Kisling came up to bat and manufactured an infield single to lengthen the inning. Leesa Harris later followed with an RBI-triple to setup Taukeiaho's round-tripper. After a single by catcher Ariel Tsuchiyama, Crawford laced an RBI-triple to the gap in right center, moving the Titans ahead, 7-4.
Grand Canyon responded with three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning to notch the contest up at 7 apiece. Crawford broke the tie once more in the bottom half of the frame sending a 3-2 pitch off of Grand Canyon's Kailey Regester (4-1), scoring Taukeiaho who drew a base on balls earlier in the inning. Crawford's third hit of contest proved to be the dagger to the Antelopes.
The Titans continue their home stand this week hosting the Judi Garman Classic. CSF has a full slate of five games in the tournament, facing San Jose State on Thursday, Fresno State on Friday, and two games on Saturday against Nebraska and Arizona, and concluding with competition against Wisconsin on Sunday. All Fullerton games will be played at Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, Calif.
