Beavers Capitalize on Two Costly Errors to Down Titans

FULLERTON, Calif—The Cal State Fullerton (11-7) softball team surrendered two costly errors to propel the Oregon State Beavers (6-11) to a 5-2 victory at Anderson Family Field on Thursday evening.

Struggling recently to withstand opponents from scoring in the first inning, Cal State Fullerton's defense yielded two early runs off an error by freshman center fielder Delynn Rippy. Beaver Kori Nishitomi led off the game with an infield single, later followed by a four-pitch walk to junior Dani Gilmore.

Alexis Gonzalez singled into center field in which the ball found its way under the glove of Rippy, giving Oregon State a 2-0 advantage. Gonzalez finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI on the evening to lead the team. The Beavers tacked on three more runs in the sixth to hold off the Titans.

In the circle for Oregon State was right-hander Amanda Najdek (4-6), who posted a complete game five-hitter, giving up two unearned runs while striking out 11 Titans. Najdek stranded seven Fullerton runners on the base paths to cruise to her fourth win of the season.

Freshman Christina Washington (2-3) pitched 5 and 1/3 innings for the Titans, fanning a career-high seven Beavers while yielding three earned runs and three walks. Washington struck out two batters in the third inning to leave the bases loaded full of Beavers to withstand further damage.

Sophomore Jasmine Antunez came in relief for Washington, tossing 1 and 2/3 innings, surrendering two hits, and striking out three Beavers to keep the Titans within striking distance.

The Titans attempted one last rally in the final frame, producing one run on two hits by Lauren Mario and Ariel Tsuchiyama. Oregon State's Najdek forced senior Eliza Crawford to ground out to the second baseman on a 3-2 pitch to seal the win.

The Titans continue their home stand this weekend co-hosting the Louisville Slugger Tournament. Fullerton will compete in two games on Friday versus Louisville and Northwestern, and conclude with two games on Saturday facing Nevada and Illinois. All Fullerton games will be played at Anderson Family Field for the weekend.

Game Notes: Najdek scattered her five hits to five different Titans in the lineup...The middle of the order for the Titans (Aragon, Galarza, Sechrest) batted a combined 1-for-9 on the evening...Freshman Titan Christina Washington struck out a career high seven batters in the loss...Nine different Fullerton players fanned against Najdek.
