Titans Upset No. 21 Virginia Tech

FULLERTON, Calif. – After losing 3-2 last wee versus Virginia Tech at the Long Beach State Invitational, Cal State Fullerton got revenge on Saturday night defeating the Hokies 7-3 at Anderson Family Field. Desiree Ybarra (5-4) delivered an impressive outing for the Titans tossing five innings in relief to record the victory. The Titans improve to 13-15, while the Hokies move to 18-4 on the year.

Ybarra relieved starter Jasmine Antunez in the third inning giving up one run off seven hits, while striking out three. The Hokies struck early scoring two in the first inning off a wild pitch from Antunez and a RBI single by third baseman Kelsey Mericka, which scored Courtney Liddle from third. After taking a 2-0 lead, the Titans answered back scoring three runs in the bottom of the first after RBI singles from Eliza Crawford and Lauren Mario.

After an RBI groundout by Virginia Tech's Danny Anderson, the Titans would take the lead for good after a Melissa Sechrest home run to deep right field. Virginia Tech's Jasmine Harrell (7-3) recorded the loss throwing three innings giving up four run, three earned, off four hits. Harrell struck out four batters before being relieved by Kelly Heinz in the fourth inning. Heinz pitched the final three innings giving up three runs on four hits.

Antunez tossed the first two innings giving up two runs off two hits, while striking out three. Melissa Sechrest was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI's, Eliza Crawford was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Lauren Mario added a hit and two stolen bases.

Fullerton will complete play at the Judi Garman Classic tomorrow at 11:30 a.m against the No. 1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners. After winning three of five games in the tournament, Virginia Tech returns home after a 13-day California road trip.
