Oregon Pitching Shuts Down Titans

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - In the final day of the Easton Desert Classic the Oregon Ducks showed why they are the NO. 7 ranked team in the country, according to the USA Today/National Fast Pitch Coashes Association poll after defeating Cal State Fullerton 6-0 on Sunday morning at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park. Oregon pitchers Cheridan Hawkins(2-1), Karissa Hovinga, and Jessica Moore combined for a one-hitter striking out nine Titans.  

Hawkins (2-1),a freshman from Anderson, Calif., in only her third career start tossed four
innings, allowing no hits and striking out four Titans. Hawkins only walked three batters and
paved way for Hovinga and Moore to finish the game. Hoving who would throw the fifth and sixth inning only allowing one hit while striking out three. Preseason All-American Jessica Moore would come in to the game in the seventh striking out the side to end the game.

The Ducks improve to 8-3 on the season, while the Titans drop to 3-6 on the season. Cal State Fullerton went 1-4 in the Easton Desert Classic and has now dropped the last five of six. After beating Utah 8-0 in five innings the night before,the Titans would go hitless against the Ducks. The Ducks bats have been inconsistent this season and the team's batting average drops to .202 on the season.

The Ducks struck early in the top first scoring three runs to begin the game.The three run inning was started off by Oregon center fielder Janie Takeda who reached on an error by CSF freshman Melissa Sechrest. After a walk to Kaylan Howard, junior catcher Alexa Peterson blasted a home run to left field to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead. Oregon would extend their lead to 6-0 in the top of the second when junior Kailee Cuico delivered a bases loaded clearing double to left center field scoring three runs. The Ducks would combine for nine hits on the day.

Tsuchiyama managed the only hit of the day for the Titans, with a bloop single in the sixth
inning. Tsuchiyama has now reached base safely in eight consecutive games for Cal State
Fullerton. The Titans threatened in the top of the first getting runners on second and third, but were unable to drive them in.

In her eight start of the season, freshman Jasmine Antunez (2-4) would throw only one inning giving up six runs, five earned, on five hits. Antunez would leave the game with the bases loaded in the top of the second inning after being relieved by sophomore Desiree Ybarra. Ybarra's first batter was Oregon's Cuico who would clear the bases in the second with a double. After giving up the bases clearing double, Ybarra would only allow four hits giving up no runs in five innings of work.

The Ducks were led by Takeda who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, Alexa Peterson who went 1-for-3 with a HR and three RBI's. Cuico would finish 1-for-3 with three RBI's also.

The Titans return home to play an exhibition game versus Japan Toyota on Wednesday Feb. 20, 2013 at Anderson Family Field at 3 p.m. before taking on Loyola Maramount and Tennesse in the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
