Titans Split Doubleheader Versus McNeese State

FULLERTON, Calif. - After being postponed due to rain on Friday, the McNeese State Cowgirls and Cal State Fullerton Titans faced off on Monday at Anderson Family Field. Freshman Jasmine Antunez struck out nine batters in eight innings of work and sophomore transfer Carissa Turang scored the lone run of the game to put the Titans ahead in game one as the home side split a doubleheader with McNeese State, winning the opener 1-0, before falling for a 5-1 loss in game two.

Fullerton moves to 2-2 on the year, while McNeese State moves to 4-3 on the season. The Titans have split both series so far and head to Las Vegas, Nev. this weekend to compete in the UNLV tournament. The Titans face Portland State and Oregon State on Friday (Feb. 15) at 9 and 11:15 a.m.

Game 1: Cal State Fullerton 1, McNeese State 0

Jasmine Antunez and Desiree Ybarra combined on a one-hitter and needed just one run coming off a throwing error to defeat the McNeese State Cowgirls 1-0 in game one of the doubleheader. Antunez (1-2) only allowed a hit and three walks, while Ybarra only allowed a base runner off an error by Samantha Galarza. The Titans scored the only run of the game in the 2nd inning off a throwing error by Mcneese State catcher Ashley Modzelewski. After an Eliza Crawford walk pinch runner Carissa Turang stole second and then was sacrificed to third. After a 10 pitch at-bat my freshman Melissa Sechrest, coach Kelly Ford brought in pinch runner Leesa Harris. Harris stole second causing Modzelewski to throw the ball into centerfield, scoring Turang from third.

Meagan Bond (2-2) recorded the loss for the Cowgirls throwing six innings while giving up three hits and striking out six. The Cowgirls only hit came in the third inning from Lauren Langer.

Game 2: McNeese State 5, Cal State Fullerton  1

After only managing one hit in game one versus Cal State Fullerton, McNeese State scored five runs off five hits to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 5-1. Starter Jamie Allred (2-0) went the distance in game two allowing only four hits and one run. The Titans lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning off an RBI groundout by Samantha Galarza.

McNeese State got on the board first with a two-run shot to right by designated player Emily Vincent off Antunez. In the sixth inning, the Cowgirls extended their lead to 5-0, off two errors by the Titans defense. Victoria Rich went 2-for-4 with a run scored, catcher Stacey Conley went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and third basemen Mallory Livingston also went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Antunez (1-2) got her fourth start for the Titans and recorded her second loss of the season. Antunez threw four innings giving up two hits and two earned runs. Senior Katey Laban relieved Antunez in the fifth and threw 1 2/3 of an inning giving up three runs, all which were unearned. Ybarra came in to close the game allowing no base runners in 1 1/3 innings.

The Titans got four hits from four different players (Carter, Sheffler, Turang, Tsuchiyama). Galarza recorded her first RBI as a Titan.
