FULLERTON, CA - UC Santa Barbara's Genelle Ives scored two goals while teammate Chandi Bickford added a goal and two assists to help lead the visiting Gauchos to a 4-1 victory over host Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference women's soccer match on Friday night at Titan Stadium.
The loss snaps the Titans' three-match winning streak, dropping them to 7-6-1 overall on the season and 3-1 in the Big West. The victory improves UCSB to 4-6-4 overall on the year and 2-1 in league play.
The Gauchos, who were averaging just a goal per match entering this weekend's play, scored four goals in a match for the second consecutive game after shutting out UC Irvine, 4-0, on Oct. 8.
UCSB converted on its first two shots of the match just five minutes apart.
The first strike came courtesy of Ives in the 13th minute, who netted her third goal of the season off a pass from Katie Smith. Ives streaked down the right side, shedded her defender, and beat the Titans' keeper to the far left post for the 1-0 lead.
The Gauchos scored again in the 17th minute as Bickford tallied her seventh of the season. Bickford took a short pass from Sami Svrcek at the top of the box and dribbled right, beating the Titans' defense to the far left post once again to make it 2-0.
Cal State Fullerton answered back in the 31st minute as Mandy Puffinberger's free kick from just outside the box was knocked away by the UCSB goalkeeper right to freshman Courtney Heinen on the doorstep, as she tapped it into a wide-open net making it 2-1.
It remained a one-goal contest through the half, but the Gauchos weren't done as Allie Kueny netted her second goal of the season in the 55th minute.
Kueny, sitting on the far left post, headed a long cross from Bickford back across the goalmouth and into the right side netting for the 3-1 advantage.
UCSB added the exclamation point in the 80th minute as Ives took a cross from Bickford and volleyed it into an open right side of the net for the final tally.
The Gauchos outshot the Titans, 14-6, including an 8-3 margin in shots on goal, and 11-3 in the second half. Ives led all players with four shots on the night.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 15) at 1 p.m. as the Titans play host to Cal Poly at Titan Stadium.
