Late Goal Lifts San Francisco to 2-1 Victory Over Fullerton

FULLERTON, CA - San Francisco's Chelsea Hunt scored unassisted on a breakaway in the 78th minute to help lift the host Dons to a 2-1 victory over No. 14 Cal State Fullerton on Friday night in San Francisco, Calif.

The loss was the Titans' second straight, dropping them to 4-3-1 overall on the year. USF evened its record at 4-4-1 overall.

With the score knotted at a goal apiece, Hunt took the ball and broke away from four Fullerton players, beating the Titans' keeper to the right post for her third goal of the year and the 2-1 lead.

The Dons' defense then stood up as a shot by Fullerton's Courtney Heinen went wide in the 79th minute and Candice Byler's scoring attempt in the 86th minute was saved by keeper Katie Hodgson to preserve the win.

San Francisco got on the board early in the first half as Lauren Tweet put the Dons up 1-0 off a pass by Jessica Duty, heading the ball into the right side of the goal.

Fullerton answered back 10 minutes later as junior Brianna Buffington put away a pass from freshman Mandy Puffinberger after a Titans' corner kick for her second goal of the season and tying the match at 1-1 in the 40th minute in the process.

The Dons outshot Fullerton, 15-11, for the match - the seventh consecutive time that the Titans have been outshot this season. USF also out-corner kicked Cal State Fullerton, 8-2, on the night.

Senior Lauryn Welch led the Titans with three shots on the evening while Hunt had six shots for San Francisco to lead all players.
