FULLERTON, CA - Southern Methodist's Logan May netted the only goal of the match in the 57th minute and senior goalkeeper Ashley Gunter made six saves on the night to lift the visiting Mustangs to a 1-0 victory over host Cal State Fullerton on Friday night in front of 280 fans at Titan Stadium.
The loss was the fourth-consecutive defeat for the Titans, who fell to 4-4 overall on the year. SMU improved to 2-4-1 overall with the victory, posting a win for the first time since Sept. 5, snapping a three-match losing streak.
Fullerton dominated the run of play, outshooting the Mustangs by a 16-3 count and amassing 11 corner kicks to none for SMU.
Despite the lopsided totals, the Mustangs' lone shot in the second half proved to be the only score of the match. Kaitlyn Eidson gathered the ball on the right side of the box and flicked a short pass to a streaking May, who got behind the defense and placed the ball into the left side netting for the 1-0 advantage.
Fullerton kept the pressure on in an attempt to tie the match, taking the final four shots in the last 20 minutes. The Titans' best attempt came off the foot of junior Erica Peschken, who had a solid attempt from within five yards with just under two minutes to play, but her soft shot with two defenders on her back trickled just wide to the right.
Gunter was solid in net for the Mustangs, turning away five shots on net in the first half as the two teams battled to a scoreless tie after 45 minutes. She had to make only one save in the second half to post her first clean sheet of the year.
Senior Tiffany Craig led all players with four shots on the night and was one of eight Titans who peppered the SMU goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Simpson did not have to make a save on the night.
Fullerton hits the road to close out the weekend's action as the Titans travel to Salt Lake City, UT, to take on the University of Utah on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 21) at 12 p.m.
