FULLERTON, CA - San Diego State scored twice in the second half, getting the game-winner from Jen Mello in the 56th minute, as the Aztecs defeated host Cal State Fullerton, 2-0, on Friday night in the 2005 season-opener for both teams at Titan Stadium.
The Titans (0-1 overall) held a 16-6 advantage in shots, but could not muster many quality scoring chances against the SDSU defense. Aztecs' goalkeeper Christi Yount made five saves in the shutout victory.
Mello got SDSU on the board at the 55:30 mark, rocketing a ball from the top of the box that glanced off the bottom of the crossbar and bounced straight down and into the net for the 1-0 lead.
San Diego State added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute as an Aztec forward was taken down in the box and SDSU was awarded a penalty kick. Amanda Swiader converted on the chance for the 2-0 lead.
For the Titans, 10 different players tallied shots with senior Rebekah Patrick leading all players with three shots on the night.
Both teams were scoreless in the first half as most of the action was played in the middle third for much of the 45 minutes. The two teams combined for only seven shots - a 4-3 advantage by the Titans.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday (Aug. 28) for a 1 p.m. kickoff with San Jose State at Titan Stadium.
