FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's soccer team lost at home against UC Irvine 2-0 in overtime on Sunday night and were eliminated in the first round of the 2022 Big West Women's Soccer Championships.
After playing UC Irvine to a 0-0 draw at the end of regulation, it was the Anteaters who scored a goal in each overtime period on corner kicks to defeat the Titans.
The Anteaters came out firing to start the game and outshot the Titans 9-to-4 in the first half but the Titans were able to withstand the pressure. The Anteaters outshot the Titans 23-to-12 for the game.
In the second half, both sides made adjustments but the Titans had the best opportunity to score when Hailey Gough was brought down in the box in the 65th minute by a UCI defender. However Kaya Hawkinson's penalty attempt was saved by the UCI keeper.
Mia Ranson was called into action not long after that and made a fantastic double save. She finished the night with nine saves and finished the season with 94 saves.
After not playing overtime all season, the Titans and UCI would test out the new overtime rules approved for the season that included two periods of 10 minute halves without the golden goal rule. UCI scored in the 95th minute after a goal by Suus de Bakker on a header off a corner kick. They would score again in the 102nd minute in the second overtime period on a header by Destinee Manzo.
The Titans wave goodbye to a large senior class with players from the 2017, 2018, and 2019 class (Katelin Bebe, Maddie Kline, Samantha McKenna, Megan Day, Kaya Hawkinson, Emelia Owen, Kaytlin Brinkman, Nadia Amezcua, Jaida Wilson, Nayeli Carcamo, Amanda Torres, and Malina Yago).
