FULLERTON, Calif. – Seniors Christina Burkenroad and Rebecca Wilson each scored a pair of goals to lead the Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over George Washington on Sunday at Titan Stadium as part of the Fullerton Tournament Presented by Embassy Suites Brea-N. Orange County.
The Titans have started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2008.
Fullerton wasted no time scoring in seventh minute as Burkenroad notched her second goal in as many games. Connie Caliz played a corner kick to the center of the box as Rebecca Wilson redirected with a header leaving Burkenroad to hammer her shot in the left side.
The Titans doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 24th minute as Morgan Batcheller found Burkenroad open on the left wing. The senior midfielder then drove a ball through the midfield into the path of Wilson as the Placentia, Calif., native slotted her goal to the far post.
George Washington (1-1-0) got on the scoreboard in the 41st minute as Charley Prevost's cross found Mackenzie Cowley open five yards in front of goal, and she was able to beat Titan goalkeeper Jennifer Stuart to the upper right corner.
Leading 2-1 at the half, Wilson added to that total in the 50th minute after a Colonial turnover proved costly and Wilson beat the GWU goalkeeper to the low far post.
Burkenroad added her third score of the game in the 80th minute as Tatianna Rizzotti delivered a cross to the middle of the box that Burkenroad volleyed for the score.
Notes: Cal State Fullerton opened the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2008 team began the year 4-0…Rebecca Wilson's 17 career goals tie for eighth in all-time Cal State Fullerton history and her 45 points tie for ninth…Fullerton scored four goals for the first time since a 4-2 victory at UC Santa Barbara (10.30.14)…Burkenroad and Wilson each totaled two goals and one assist in the match for a total of five points. The last Titan to score five points in a game was Janali West (6) at Pacific (10.28.12)…the last Titan to have two goals in a game was Burkenroad at UC Santa Barbara (10.28.14).
