FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team will team up with Soccer For Hope, a non-profit cancer awareness foundation located in Orange County, to help spread cancer awareness at the team's final spring match at 5 p.m., Saturday.

The match has been moved to Titan Track Complex.

The Titans will close the spring season welcoming CSU Bakersfield, and like all spring matches, admission to the Titan Track Complex will be free as Fullerton hosts its CSF Soccer Cancer Awareness Match.

Prior to Fullerton's spring finale, an exhibition match between Fullerton Rangers U11 and West Coast FC U11 will kick-off at 3 p.m.  There will also be food trucks, shaved ice and kettle corn.

"Over the last 10 years, we have taken great pleasure in supporting our friends at Soccer For Hope," Cal State Fullerton women's soccer head coach Demian Brown said. "Soccer For Hope is an unbelievable organization and a tremendous way for our program to support children and families affected by cancer. We are excited for the match, but even more so for the opportunity to do our part in the fight against cancer and the search for the cure."
 
Soccer for Hope will be in attendance at Saturday's match to distribute information about the organization's work as the Titans have associated with the non-profit for over 10 years, participating in yearly camps.

Soccer For Hope is an organization founded by Oliver & Jamie Wyss in 1998. Oliver, is a former professional soccer player and survivor of Aplastic Anemia. The organization has been driven by its goal to raise funds and awareness for children with life-threatening diseases.

"As a team we feel very honored to be selected to help out with the camp every year, not only for the kids that attend, but to help raise awareness for cancer research," junior midfielder Adriana Gjonovich said.

Oliver & Jamie's young children, Hudson and Abella, were both diagnosed with very rare, cancerous brain tumors. Since its inception, Soccer For Hope has progressed from an annual local event in Southern California to a nationwide charity that benefits thousands of children and their families.

"I was both a mom and cancer researcher when my children attended their first Soccer For Hope camp," Soccer For Hope event organizer Adeela Syed said. "The camp was amazing and fun for the kids, with college coaches and players volunteering their time.  The best thing about the Soccer For Hope camp was that the emphasis was not on soccer, but on hope for sick children to have the best possible life, and for healthy children to treat all kids with respect.

 

T"After meeting Oliver and Jamie Wyss, and learning about Soccer For Hope and the struggles they were going through with their own children fighting cancer, I personally have approached parenting, research and life with an enhanced appreciation. I am grateful that I have been able to help their cause, and I am especially impressed with how selfishly colleges such as Cal State Fullerton make time out of their busy schedule every year to attend the annual camp and give their support to the Soccer For Hope.

 

Be The Match will also be in attendance at the match allowing fans, families, alumni or faculty and staff to voluntarily register as bone marrow donors.

 

The Cal State Fullerton men's soccer team will also be present to help support the cancer awareness initiative.

"Soccer for Hope is an amazing organization to help fundraise money for children with cancer," junior defender Colleen Ortega said. "It feels good to be able to give back as a Division I athlete and support such an amazing program."
