RECAPPING 2013
The Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team completed the 2013 season with a record of 8-7-7 after winning the Big West Tournament championship and making the program's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance.
Fullerton's seven ties marked a season high for the program, surpassing the previous record of five ties in 2009.
FULLERTON AT THE 2013 NCAA TOURNAMENT
Stanford's Taylor Uhl scored on a rebound of her own first-half shot giving the then 17th-ranked Cardinal a 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 15 in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament at Cagan Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif.
Stanford got on the board early, tallying the first goal in the 14th minute of the match. The lone goal of the game came off a left side cross from Courtney Verloo, which Uhl received and quickly fired a shot off the top of the crossbar. The shot rebounded back to the junior from Eden Praire, Minn., for a second chance which snuck past the Titan goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic for a 1-0 advantage.
Erica Mazeau nearly tied the match in the second half for the Titans after a low shot was saved by the fingertips of Stanford goalkeeper Jane Campbell. Fullerton's best chance came with a little more than four minutes left to play when freshmen Ali White barely missed the left post.
Maricic kept the Titans in the game making 10 saves on the night, including seven in the second half.
HISTORY AT THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Titans boast a record of 3-5 at the NCAA Tournament with Fullerton's best finish in 2005 as the Titans reached the third round before suffering a 2-1 loss to Virginia.
In five trips to the NCAA Tournament, the Titans have played UCLA on three occasions (0-3; 2001, 2006, 2007) and have been sent to Los Angeles to play the Bruins in the first round on two occasions (2001, 2007).
The 2013 first-round trip to Stanford was the first postseason meeting between the two programs.
Fullerton's record in the first round is 2-3, including an 0-3 mark in first-round road games. Overall, the Titans hold a road record of 0-5 at the NCAA Tournament.
HOW THE TITANS GOT TO THE NCAA TOURNEY
The Titans clinched the Big West Conference's automatic NCAA Tournament berth after winning their fourth league tournament championship on Nov. 10 courtesy of a 2-1 advantage in a penalty kick shootout against UC Riverside after the teams battled to a 1-1 draw following 110 minutes of regulation (90) and overtime (20).
Titan goalkeeper and Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player Katie Pulliam made three stops during the shootout, after saving two Cal Poly penalty kicks in the semifinals on Nov. 7. The Titans, the No. 4 and lowest seed at the Big West Tournament, ousted the No. 1 seeded Mustangs on Nov. 7 after the match ended in a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes and the Titans advanced 4-3 on penalty kicks.
Fullerton was hosting the tournament at Titan Stadium after winning the 2012 Big West regular season championship.
The Titans' last Big West Tournament title came in 2007, the last time the event was held at Titan Stadium. Fullerton also advanced on penalty kicks in the championship match to eliminate Cal Poly.

AWARD SEASON
Sophomore Morgan Batcheller, senior Lindsey Maricic and senior Erica Mazeau, were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire All- West Region Team, it was announced on Dec. 4.
Mazeau, a midfielder from Yorba Linda, Calif., was named to the All-West Region second team, while Maricic and Batcheller received third team honors.
"I'm very happy for all three of our Titans," head coach Demian Brown said. "For our student-athletes to be recognized on this level is a special accomplishment that represents their incredible importance to our program."
For Fullerton, it marks the first time the women's soccer program has earned three all-region nods in one season.
Mazeau, the 2013 Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year, led the Titans in scoring with a total of 14 points, producing team highs in goals (4) and assists (6).
Of her six assists during the season, three were game winners.
Maricic, named the 2013 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year, led the conference in saves (104), goals against average (0.73) and save percentage (.867).
In Fullerton single-season history, the Alta Loma, Calif., native's 104 saves rank third all-time, followed by 5.2 saves per game (5th), .867 save percentage (2nd), 0.73 goals against average (3rd) and five shutouts (T-5th).
Batcheller, just a sophomore, started all 22 games in 2013, and helped anchor a Titan defense that led the Big West in goals allowed (17) and goals against average (0.71) while also totaling seven shutouts.
In addition, the Carlsbad, Calif., native, scored Fullerton's golden goal in a 2-1 victory at USC and added a score against Cal State Northridge.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Cal State Fullerton completed the 2013 season with a record of 7-1-5 at Titan Stadium. The Titans' seven home wins mark the most for the program since the 2005 team finished the season 10-1-0 in Fullerton.
In addition, Cal State Fullerton posted two all-time top-10 crowds during the year as 1,176 fans (No. 6) were in attendance for Fullerton's 1-0 victory over Loyola Marymount on Sept. 13. Fullerton's Big West championship match against UC Riverside drew 1,039 fans to Titan Stadium, rating 10th all-time.
ADJUSTING THE RECORD BOOK
Erica Mazeau completed her Cal State Fullerton career with 14 assists - including a team-leading six during her senior year - a number that ranks eighth in CSF program history. In addition, Mazeau's assist on Nikki McCants' game-winner against UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 20 was her third game-winning assist of the season (tied for third on the school's single-season list) and the sixth of her career, placing her in a tie for second on Fullerton's all-time list.
Other places you'll find Mazeau in next year's record book - from Sept. 22-Oct. 6, Mazeau recorded at least one point in five straight matches, a feat completed by only seven others in the history of the women's soccer program. During that stretch, she scored a goal and assisted on the golden goal game winner in a 2-1 victory at USC, while providing assists in a 1-1 tie at Pepperdine (Sept. 27) and a 2-1 win against Gonzaga (Sept. 29). She scored Fullerton's first goal of the match unassisted in a 2-1 overtime win against Hawai'i (Oct. 4), and assisted on the game-tying goal vs. Cal State Northridge (Oct. 6). During that stretch, Mazeua also became one of just seven players in Fullerton history to provide at least one assist in three straight games.
BETWEEN THE POSTS
Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic departs Cal State Fullerton with her name littering the record book. Her career numbers include 245 saves - trailing on Karen Bardsley (312), - 4.08 saves per game (5th all-time), .806 save percentage (2nd all-time), 0.94 goals against average (3rd all-time), 24 wins (2nd all-time), 16 shutouts (2nd all-time) and 5,645 minutes played (2nd all-time).
In addition, this season the Alta Loma, Calif., also totaled 104 saves during the season, ranking third in single-season history, while also setting the Fullerton single-season record with an .867 save percentage. Her 0.73 goals against average in 2013 ranked third in single-season history, and her 15 saves at Pepperdine marked the second highest total for a Titan goalkeeper in a single match.
"THE SUSPENSE IS TERRIBLE... I HOPE IT'LL LAST"
Don't leave early, there's plenty of soccer left to play. In 2013, it was almost routine for the Titans to play an overtime period, entering extra time play on 10 occasions -- one shy of their NCAA record-tying 11 overtime matches in 2011. The Titans were unbeaten in overtime (3-0-7) in 2013, and are 13-10-21 in extra time during Head Coach Demian Brown's seven seasons.
FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC
Cal State Fullerton made it a habit of scoring late this season, netting nine of its 18 goals -- three of those going for "golden goal" game-winners -- in the 70th minute or later. Morgan Batcheller, who had the game-tying goal against the Matadors in the 72nd minute on Oct. 6 (and had another in the 108th minute at USC earlier in the year), has two of the nine goals, heading up a group that includes Ali White (74' at BYU), Rebecca Wilson (71' vs. Montana), Brianna Chapman (89' vs. LMU), Janali West (74' vs. Gonzaga), Summer Chavez (93' vs. Hawaii), Nikki McCants (88th vs. UC Santa Barbara) and Erica Mazeau (110th minute vs. UC Davis).
HELPING HERSELF TO THE RECORD BOOK
: Another match, another assist for Erica Mazeau as she was charged with the assist on Janali West's goal against Long Beach State on Oct. 31. The assist was 14th of the senior's career, placing her eighth on the school's all-time list in the category.
WELL, THAT WAS QUICK
Summer Chavez's strike just 2:35 into overtime against Hawai'i on Oct. 4 was the sixth-fastest overtime goal by a Titan in school history and the quickest since JeAnne Mazeau scored just 58 seconds into the first extra time period at Cal State Northridge on Oct. 5 of last season.
NUMBER 10...
Nikki McCants became the 10th different Titan to score a goal this season with her volley in the 88th minute against UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 20. Only five players (Erica Mazeau, Christina Burkenroad, Janali West and Morgan Batcheller and McCants) scored multiple times this season. McCants scored three of Fullerton's last four goals, including two at the Big West Tournament. Her volley in the 37th minute tied Cal Poly in the semifinals on Nov. 7, while her header in the 14th minute put the Titans in the lead vs. UC Riverside on Nov. 10. McCants completed her Titan career with 11 goals.
THE 200 CLUB
With her 12 saves on the opening weekend of Big West play, senior goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic joined a very select group in Cal State Fullerton women's soccer history, becoming only the third keeper to eclipse the 200-save plateau for a career. Adding 10 saves against Stanford, Maricic's 245 career saves trail only Karen Bardsley's school-record 312 saves from 2002-06 on the all-time list.
PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES
Maricic's .864 save percentage in 2013 set a school record, eclipsing the mark of .848 set by Karen Bardsley in 2006. Maricic allowed just 16 goals this season.
ALL TIED UP
The Nov. 10 draw against UC Riverside marked the 11th career tie with Maricic in net -- far and away the all-time record for a Fullerton keeper, doubling up the previous mark held by Bardsley and Shannon Simpson (2007-10), who each had four decisions that ended in draws during their careers.
MINUTE-WOMAN
With her 90 minutes played in goal at Stanford, Lindsey Maricic solidified her hold on the No. 2 spot with 5,645 career minutes played between the pipes, trailing career leader Karen Bardsley (6,395 minutes from 2002-06).
"THIS" CLOSE
: Twenty of Cal State Fullerton's 22 matches in 2013 were decided by a single goal or fewer, save for a 3-1 loss at No. 6 BYU in the season opener on Aug. 23 and a 2-0 win over Montana on Sept. 1 at home.
AMONG THE NATION'S BEST
: How does the Titans' defense stand up nationally, you ask? Among all 323 NCAA programs, the Titans rank No. 10 in the nation in save percentage (.869), while ranking 26th in goals against average (0.709). Individually, senior goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic ranked among the top 100 in four different categories: No. 10 in save percentage (.867), No. 62 in saves per game (5.20), No. 33 in goals against average (0.730) and No. 35 in saves (104).
DE-FENSE (CLAP, CLAP)
Fullerton's defense has emerged as one of the best in the league, ranking atop the Big West statistical rankings in fewest goals allowed (17), goals against average (0.71), and saves (113), while standing tied for third in shutouts (7).
