KICK OFF: Unbeaten in five of its last six matches, the Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team (6-4-4 overall, 1-0-1 Big West Conference) plays the conference's northern foes this weekend. Fullerton will play its second straight road match, traveling to Cal Poly (7-7-0, 3-1-0 Big West) for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday as the Mustangs are currently in a two-way tie at the top of the Big West Conference standings. Fullerton returns to Titan Stadium on Sunday at 6 p.m. to host UC Santa Barbara (8-6-1, 2-2-0).
IN THE POLLS: Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara are not currently listed among the nation's top 25 entering this week's contests. The trio, however, completes the West Region rankings according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America: No. 9 Cal State Fullerton, T10. Cal Poly, T10. UC Santa Barbara.

"O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!": Cal State Fullerton junior midfielder Chelsey Patterson has been named team captain for the 2013 season.
CAL POLY BRIEFLY: By picking up six points in the Big West Conference standings last week with wins over Cal State Northridge and Hawai'i, the Cal Poly women's soccer team moved into a tie for first place with UC Irvine. INneach of Cal Poly's 14 matches this season, the team that has scored first has gone on to win. The Mustangs and Titans have similar number as Cal Poly ranks second to CSF in saves (70), and leads the Titans by four in fouls (180). In addition, Cal Poly is tied for Cal State Northridge at the top of the league with 14 yellow cards. Cal Poly's Elise Krieghoff leads the Big West Conference in six offensive categories: shots (85), shots per game (6.07), points (35), points per game (2.50), goals (16), goals per game (1.14).
SERIES NOTES: Cal State Fullerton trails the all-time series with Cal Poly 7-12-4, although in 2012, the Titans defeated the Mustangs 4-0 on Oct. 21 at Titan Stadium...eliminating last season's win, the matches between Cal Poly and Fullerton have been decided by one goal or less on eight occasions dating back to 2006, with the Mustangs holding a slight 4-2-2 advantage…Fullerton is 2-6-1 against Cal Poly on the Mustangs' home field, falling 2-1 in double overtime on Sept. 30, 2011.
UC SANTA BARBARA BRIEFLY: The Gauchos, at 8-6-1 overall and 2-2 in league play, currently rank fourth in the Big West Conference standings…the Gauchos host UC Riverside on Friday before traveling to Fullerton Sunday…UC Santa Barbara has had nine games decided by one goal this season to lead the league…UC Santa Barbara's 19 goals rank third in the Big West…the Gauchos are also one of the top defensive teams in the league, ranking just behind the Titans with a 0.87 goals against average.
SERIES NOTES: Cal State Fullerton leads the all-time series with UC Santa Barbara, 11-9-1... four of the last six meetings betwen the two programs have resulted in shutouts, with the Gauchos recording three shutouts, and Fullerton holding UCSB scoreless in a 2-0 win on Oct. 5, 2008... the two teams have battled to overtime three times in the history of the series with Fullerton holding a 2-0-1 edge.
"THE SUSPENSE IS TERRIBLE... I HOPE IT'LL LAST": Don't leave early, there's plenty of soccer left to play. It's almost become routine for the Titans to play an overtime period or two this season as they have done six times thus far in 2013 -- including four of its last six contests -- tying the team's total from all of 2012 and five shy of their NCAA record-tying 11 overtime matches in 2011. The Titans remained unbeaten in overtime (2-0-4) and are 12-10-18 (.525) in extra time during Head Coach Demian Brown's six-plus seasons.
"WAIT A MINUTE. STRIKE THAT. REVERSE IT.": As Fullerton opened its 2013 season, the offense struggled to find its legs, scoring just five times in its first eight contests (3-3-2 record). The Titans recently reversed that trend, scoring eight times during their five-match unbeaten streak from Sept. 22-Oct. 6 (3-0-2 record), including multiple goals in three of those matches. Last Sunday, Fullerton's five-match unbeaten streak was snapped in 1-0 loss at UC Riverside. The Titans were shut out for the first time since suffering a 1-0 loss to Washington State on Sept. 20.
FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC: Cal State Fullerton has made it a habit of scoring late this season, netting seven of its 13 goals -- two of those going for "golden goal" game-winners -- in the 70th minute or later, including a pair against Hawai'i (Oct. 4) and Cal State Northridge (Oct. 6). Morgan Batcheller, who had the game-tying goal against the Matadors in the 72nd minute on Oct. 6 (and had another in the 108th minute at USC earlier in the year), has two of the seven goals, heading up a group that includes Ali White (74' at BYU), Rebecca Wilson (71' vs. Montana), Brianna Chapman (89' vs. LMU), Janali West (74' vs. Gonzaga), and Summer Chavez (93' vs. Hawaii).
HOME COOKING: Fullerton's performances two weeks ago moved the Titans to 5-1-3 within the friendly confines of Titan Stadium, matching their home win total from all of 2012 (5-5) and standing just one shy of their 2011 mark of 6-4-2 on their home turf. The record for most home wins was set in 1996 (10-5) and later matched by the 2005 squad (10-1).
HELPING HERSELF TO THE RECORD BOOK: Another match, another assist for Erica Mazeau. Her helper on Morgan Batcheller's game-tying goal late in the game against Cal State Northridge on Oct. 6, was the 12th of the senior's career, placing her in a four-way tie for ninth on the school's all-time list in the category. Mazeau stands just one back of Erin Shelton (2002-05) for eighth place and six back of co-record holders Dolores Browning (1995-98) and Kellie Cox (2001-05) for the top spot.
SUMMER TIME!: Yes, it's October, but on Oct. 4 against Hawai'i, the Titans were smack dab in the middle of "Summer Time" after Fullerton senior Summer Chavez gave her side a win in a Big West opener for the first time since 2010. The senior from Bakersfield, Calif., tallied her first of the year from 30 yards out, tucking the shot just under the crossbar in the 93rd minute for the game-winner. It was only the second career goal for Chavez and her first since scoring in a 3-2 win at UC Davis as a freshman on Oct. 8, 2010.
WELL, THAT WAS QUICK: SummerChavez's strike just 2:35 into overtime against Hawai'i was the sixth-fastest overtime goal by a Titan in school history and the quickest since JeAnne Mazeau scored just 58 seconds into the first extra time period at Cal State Northridge on Oct. 5 of last season.
NUMBER 9... NUMBER 9... NUMBER 9...: Summer Chavez became the ninth different Titan to score a goal this season with her overtime strike to beat Hawai'i -- the third time in the last five goals that a new Fullerton player has put their name into the scoring column. Only three players (Erica Mazeau, Christina Burkenroad, and Morgan Batcheller) have scored multiple times this season.
THE 200 CLUB: With her 12 saves this on the opening weekend of Big West play, senior goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic joined a very select group in Cal State Fullerton women's soccer history, becoming only the third keeper to eclipse the 200-save plateau for a career. Adding four saves last Sunday at UCR, her 214 career saves rank behind only Laura Janke's 235 stops from 2000-03 and Karen Bardsley's school-record 312 saves from 2002-06 on the all-time list. In addition, Maricic's 73 saves this season rank seventh on the single-season chart and mark a career-best for the Alta Loma, Calif., native.
PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES: If the season ended today, Maricic's .880 save percentage would be a school record, eclipsing the mark of .848 set by Karen Bardsley in 2006. Maricic has allowed just 10 goals in 92 shots on frame this season which, right now, stands as the fewest goals allowed by a Fullerton starting keeper since Bardsley let in just 13 goals in 2005.
ALL TIED UP: The Oct. 6 draw against Cal State Northridge marked the eighth career tie with Maricic in net -- far and away the all-time record for a Fullerton keeper, doubling up the previous mark held by Bardsley and Shannon Simpson (2007-10), who each had four decisions that ended in draws during their careers.
MINUTE-WOMAN: With her 90 minutes played last weekend, Maricic solidified her hold on the No. 2 spot with 5,693 career minutes played between the pipes, standing just 702 back of career leader Karen Bardsley (6,395 minutes from 2002-06) -- a mark that is within striking distance with five regular season matches to play, in addition to, any possible conference and NCAA tournament games.
ELSEWHERE...: Lindsey Maricic also ranks among the school's top five in saves per game (5th - 4.12), save percentage (2nd - .802), goals against average (3rd - 0.98), and wins (4th - 22).
#WINNING: Erica Mazeau's assist on Janali West's game-winner against Gonzaga on Sept. 29 was her second game-winning assist of the season (tied for ninth on the school's single-season list) and the fifth of her career, placing her in a tie for fourth on Fullerton's all-time list -- four back of Kellie Cox's career mark of nine from 2001-05.
"THIS" CLOSE: Twelve of Cal State Fullerton's 14 matches this season have been decided by a single goal or fewer, save for a 3-1 loss at No. 6 BYU in the season opener on Aug. 23 and a 2-0 win over Montana on Sept. 1 at home.
AMONG THE NATION'S BEST: How does the Titans' defense stand up nationally, you ask? Among all 323 NCAA programs, the Titans rank No. 8 in the nation in save percentage (.880) while ranking among the top 60 in goals against average (40th, 0.728) and saves per game (No. 55, 5.79). Individually, senior goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic ranks among the top 100 in four different categories: No. 13 in save percentage (.880), No. 36 in saves (73), No. 28 in saves per game (6.08), and No. 51 in goals against average (0.763).
DE-FENSE (CLAP, CLAP): Fullerton's defense has emerged as one of the best in the league through the first half of the season, ranking atop the league statistical rankings in fewest goals allowed (11), goals against average (0.73), and saves (81), while standing second in shutouts (5). If they keep this up, the Titans could challenge the school record for fewest goals allowed in a season (15 in 2005).
BE AGGRESSIVE, B-E AGGRESSIVE: Cal State Fullerton, whistled for 176 fouls to start the season (behind Cal Poly; 180), has been the aggressor on the pitch thus far, racking up 11 matches with 10 or more fouls and leading the opposition in that category in 11 of its 14 contests this season -- including a season-high 27 fouls on Sept. 15 against Utah State. Only Fresno State (23-11), Gonzaga (15-12) and UC Riverside (9-5) have "out-fouled" the Titans this season.
TOP DRAWER RANKING: Erica Mazeau, Lindsey Maricic and Morgan Batcheller were named to Top Drawer Soccer's Top 20 List for the Big West Conference.
