Titans Suffer OT Heartbreaker in Michigan, 2-1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Lulu Haidar's first goal of the season with just over two minutes to play in the first overtime period Friday night rallied host Michigan to a 2-1 extra-time victory over Cal State Fullerton at the U-M Soccer Stadium in front of 504 fans.

It was the second consecutive 2-1 overtime defeat for the Titans, who fell to 0-3 to start the 2012 campaign. Fullerton fell by the exact same score at Loyola Marymount on Aug. 19 in Los Angeles. The Wolverines improved to 3-0 overall on the season with the victory.

Senior Stacey Fox brought the Titans level with just under four minutes to play in regulation after Jen Pace had given Michigan the lead in the 67th minute. Fox coverted on a corner kick by teammate Erica Mazeau, heading home a perfectly placed ball to the far post to make it 1-1.

That stood until the 98th minute when Haidar's "golden goal" ended the match off a set play following a foul whistled against Fullerton about 30 yards from the goal. Her shot deflected off the crossbar and in for the winning score.

The Titans, who outshot the Wolverines, 19-15, for the match had Michigan on its heels in the opening 45 minutes, taking eight shots to the host's two en route to a scoreless tie at the break.

Pace then put the Wolverines ahead off a corner by Shelby Chambers-Garcia that fell inside the six-yard box and unable to be cleared by the Titans' defense. Following Fox's game-tying strike, Michigan had a chance to win it in regulation, but Tori McCombs' apparent goal off a pass from Haidar as time expired was waved off by the officials, forcing overtime.

Fox led all players with five shots on the night while junior goalkeeper Katie Pulliam was credited with six saves in the loss. Haidar and Meghan Toohey each had three shots to pace the Wolverines.

Fullerton's trip to Michigan concludes on Sunday (Aug. 26) at 9 a.m. PT as the Titans travel to East Lansing to take on Michigan State.
