SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Cal State Fullerton sophomore Martina Edberg wrapped up the opening round of the NCAA South Bend Regional Championships hosted by Notre Dame Thursday at The Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.

Edberg finished the first 18 holes with a 7-over 79, placing her in a tie for 70th place after the first day of competition. She trails Duke's Celine Boutier, who holds the round one lead after carding a 5-under 67.

The Titans sophomore and scoring average leader in 2015, Edberg was one of six competing as individuals at the South Bend Regional and was amongst the first players to tee off from Hole No. 1 on Thursday. Edberg was at 3-over through the front-nine, carding six pars and three bogeys. She was just four shots off the lead at that point.

On the back nine, Edberg had a bogey on No. 11 but then picked up her first and only birdie of the day on the par-4 No. 13 to get back to 3-over.  But the sophomore ran into some trouble on the last five holes, recording two bogeys and a double bogey on No. 18 to finish the day at 7-over.

Edberg is set to tee off from hole No. 10 at 5:45 a.m. PT Friday morning for second round action, paired with Gabby Yurik (Michigan State, +7) and Elizabeth Tong (Indiana, +7) who are also competing as individuals.

Edberg is the first Titans golfer to ever be selected to the regionals since the women's golf program was reinstated for the 2009-10 season. She is one of three golfers from the Big West Conference selected to the NCAA Regionals. Savannah Vilaubi (UC Riverside) and Kassidy Teare (Long Beach State) competed at the St. George Regional Site hosted by Brigham Young University in St. George, Utah on Thursday.

In 2015, Edberg led the Titans with a 74.19 scoring average and played in all nine tournaments. She secured her third career victory after finishing with a 3-over 219 at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational on Feb. 23-24.

Overall, Edberg finished the 2014-15 season with three top-5, five top-10 and seven top-20 finishes. She was selected to the All-Big West Conference First Team for the second consecutive year.

In 2014, Edberg won two tournaments and became the first Titans golfer to win the Big West Conference Individual championship. She was also named the Big West Conference Freshman Player of the Year after finishing her first season with a 74.81 scoring average, which was the lowest single-season average in Cal State Fullerton history.

Six teams and three individuals from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
