Edberg in Striking Distance to Defend Title at Spartan Invitational

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sophomore Martina Edberg sits in a tie for third place and the Cal State Fullerton women's golf team sits in ninth Monday after the conclusion of the first day of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at Almaden Golf and Country Club in San Jose, Calif.

Edberg shot a 5-over 149 on the day, posting a 3-over 75 in the first round followed by a 2-over 74 in the final round of the day. Edberg, who earned her first career victory at this event a year ago, is currently just one stroke back of co-leaders Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir and Hannah Sodersten of Fresno State.

As for the team, the Titans shot a collective 56-over 632 to sit in ninth place. They were tied for fifth after posting a 313 in the opening round, but fell back after shooting a 319 in round two. Fresno State currently leads the field with a 21-over 597 followed by host San Jose State in second with a 33-over 609 and third-place Boise State at a 40-over 616.

Freshman Brittany Farrell currently sits in a tie for 26th place on the individual leaderboard after posting a 14-over 158 after the first day. She posted consecutive rounds of 79 on Monday.

Tisha Alyn Abrea is in a tie for 38th place after posting an 18-over 162 on Monday. She was in a good spot after posting a 5-over 77 in the first round but had a rough second round, going for a 13-over 85.

Nadine Rivera rounded out the Titans scoring with a 19-over 163 on Monday, finishing in a tie for 40th heading into the final round.

The Titans will wrap up the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational Tuesday with a shotgun start scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
