Three-Point Performance Propels LBSU to Victory

LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Long Beach State led from start to finish in an 84-55 victory over Cal State Fullerton at Walter Pyramid on Thursday night in Big West Conference action.

 

With the win, the 49ers improve to 17-8 overall and 8-2 in league play, while the Titans (4-19, 1-9 BWC) have now dropped their last six contests.

 

Jessica Gertz scored a game-high 29 points, shooting 9-of-21 from three-point range for LBSU. As a team, Long Beach State made 20 buckets from long distance, shooting at a clip of .444 from behind the arc. Gertz's nine treys set a new individual single-game record for the 49ers, while the team's 20 treys matched a single-game record.

 

Gigi Hascheff poured in 11 points knocking down three 3-pointers for Long Beach State, while Madison Montgomery also chipped in 11. Anna Kim knocked down three treys en route to an 11-point performance while also delivering a game-high six assists.

 

Jordan Jackson led the Titans in scoring for the second-straight game shooting 6-of-12 from the floor en route to a 15-point effort. Daeja Smith added 12 points for Fullerton, while Iman Lathan chipped in 12 off the bench. Senior Dhanyel Johnson pulled down a game and career-high 15 rebounds, while Jade Vega had an all-around effort scoring eight points, grabbing five rebounds and delivering three assists.

 

A theme for the majority of the season, 23 turnovers plagued Cal State Fullerton and led to 29 points for Long Beach State. The 49ers also held a 19-5 advantage in second-chance points.

 

The 49ers shot 41.7 percent (30-of-72) from the floor, delivering 23 assists. The Titans shot 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor with 12 assists.

 

Long Beach State built an 11-0 lead to start the game until Vega drained a three-pointer with 6:51 remaining in the first quarter.

 

Cal State Fullerton hosts Cal Poly at 5 p.m., Saturday as part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and fans are encouraged to wear pink as Fullerton will be hosting a Play4Kay game to raise awareness for women's cancers. Fans will also be given pink wristbands upon admission.

 

Notes: The Titans are 0-11 on the road this season…Jordan Jackson scored a career-high 15 points and led Cal State Fullerton in scoring for the second straight game…Long Beach State's 20 made three-pointers were an opponent season high for Fullerton, and matched LBSU's all-time high also set against Cal State Fullerton one season ago (01/09/16)…Jessica Gertz's nine treys were also an opponent season best and a new LBSU individual single-game record…Dhanyel Johnson grabbed a game and career high 15 rebounds….Fullerton's 29-point loss was it largest margin of defeat in Big West Conference action this season.
