Olajuwon Heads to Eastern Michigan Along with Other Staff Changes

FULLERTON, Calif. – Former Cal State Fullerton assistant coach, Abi Olajuwon, has accepted an assistant coach position at Eastern Michigan University, it was announced Friday.

Olajuwon spent the past two years as an assistant coach and during her first season played an integral part in the 2015 Titans' run in the Big West Tournament.

Olajuwon, the daughter of NBA hall of fame center Hakeem Olajuwon, took over the recruiting coordinator duties in her second season while also responsible for post player development, academics, community outreach and fundraising.

"I'm very excited and proud of Abi as she takes this next step in her coaching career," head coach Daron Park said. "Abi was an integral part of our program here at Fullerton. I am proud to have given Abi her first coaching job and wish her all the best as she moves forward with her career."

Prior to joining the Titans' coaching staff, Olajuwon played basketball at the University of Oklahoma where she helped the Sooners reach the Final Four in both 2009 and 2010. After graduation, she spent three years playing professionally in the WNBA and overseas.

During her senior season, she started all 38 games at center, averaging 10.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, while also shooting 50.6 percent from the floor. Also during her final year as a Sooner, she averaged 13.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game during the team's Final Four run.

Olajuwon will head to Eastern Michigan to assist her mentor and recently named head coach, Fred Castro. Castro joins the Eastern Michigan family after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Washington the past three seasons.
