Titans Drop Hard-Fought Contest at Hawai’i, 62-53

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Michelle Berry recorded her eighth double-double of the season in a 22 point, 16 rebound effort and Lauren Nubla recorded a season-high 12 points as the Titans' dropped a hard-fought heartbreaker in Honolulu, 62-53 on Thursday night.

The Titans (2-18, 0-6 BWC) outshot the Wahine in three-pointers and free throws, yet were outrebounded 47-37 and outshot on the floor by only 1%.

The physical contest brought on a season-high for the Titans, accumulating 27 fouls while Dani Craig and Nubla both recorded their first foulouts of the season.

Dhanyel Johnson and Madison Crawford both made their first starts of the season, the first of Crawford's career and recorded a career-high 23 minutes.

Nubla got the Titans on the board first with a layup until Hawai'I responded with four of their own to take the lead.

At the first media timeout, both teams had shot just a combined 4-17 as the Wahine led the Titans 7-3.

The Titans answered back with a quick five-point run yet their seven turnovers gave Hawai'i 10 points to lead the Titans 16-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Hawai'I dominated the start of the second quarter offensively yet back-to-back three's from Nubla and Portia Neale late in the first half cut the deficit to only six, trailing Hawai'i 31-37.

The Titans recorded 12 fouls in the first half while cleaning up on the glass and outrebounded the Big West rebounding leaders, 22-21.

The second half got off to a slow start as UH outscored the Titans 4-2 in the first five minutes of play. Yet the Titans continued to battle in the third, outscoring Hawai'i 11-7 to cut the deficit to only two at the end of the third quarter.

Berry kicked off the fourth quarter with a layup to tie the game at 44 and to reach her fourth 20-point game of the season. A few minutes later, a five-point Hawai'i run gave them a three-point edge with exactly five minutes left in the game.

The game boiled down to the last few minutes, yet Hawai'i began to break away with just over two minutes left and a six-point lead.

The Titans were outrebounded in the final few minutes to be the deciding factor as the Titans fell in a heartbreaker, 62-53.

Fullerton returns to the court on Saturday afternoon as they head to Northridge to take on the Matadors at 4 p.m.
