Titans’ Comeback Falls Short In 58-62 Loss to UC Irvine

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Titans had three players score in double-digit points and two collect double-digit rebounds yet it wasn't enough as the Titans fell to UC Irvine 58-62 in Titan Gym on Saturday night.

Freshman Michelle Berry recorded her seventh double-double of the year with 18 points and 14 rebounds while Dhanyel Johnson set a new career-high with her 10 rebounds collected on the night.

The Titans (2-17, 0-5 BWC) shot 38.5% from the field while producing 23 turnovers for the third-straight game.

The Titans got off to a fast start, kicking off the game on a 6-2 run before UC Irvine came back to take a 7-6 lead after the first media timeout. The Anteaters continued their run with another three thanks in part to the six Titan turnovers early in the first quarter.

Yet turnovers continued to plague the Titans in the first quarter as Fullerton totaled 11, leading them to a seven-point deficit, trailing UC Irvine 9-16 after the first quarter.

Dani Craig stepped it up for the Titans in the second quarter, providing five points yet it wasn't enough as the Anteaters scored 10 points in the before the second media timeout to take a 16-26 lead with just under four minutes left in the first half.

Berry reached double-digit rebounds in the first half, pulling down her 10th rebound.

At the end of the first half, the Titans trailed UC Irvine 22-27. Craig led the charge offensively with nine points while Berry followed closely behind with eight points and 10 rebounds after the first 20 minutes of play.

Jade Vega sparked the Titans by opening up with an early layup in the third quarter while Berry followed suit to record her 7th double-double of the year.

After an exciting four-point run in the third quarter that helped the Titans close the gap, the Anteaters responded back to lead the Titans 42-34 to end the third quarter.

The Titans attacked early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to only three before UC Irvine answered back to keep their lead.

The Titans attempted a comeback and cut the deficit to only four with 46.1 seconds left on the clock yet fell short as Fullerton dropped their 17th straight, 58-62 to UC Irvine.

Fullerton returns to action next week as they head to Hawai'I to take on the Wahine to continue Big West play on Thursday night.

 

NOTES: Vega and Craig recorded their 8th and 9th double-digit games respectively…. Johnson's 10 rebounds is the first double-digit rebounding game of her career….
