FULLERTON, Calif. – Freshman Michelle Berry recorded her fifth double-double of the season while freshman Jade Vega recorded 11 points in a 65-45 loss to UC Santa Barbara in Titan Gym on Thursday night.
The Titans shot 32.7% from the floor while shooting 27.8% from behind the arc. Berry's fifth double-double breaks the school record for number of double-double's recorded by a freshman.
UC Santa Barbara was led by a trio of Gauchos who hit double-digit points while recorded 30 of their points from off the bench.
Fullerton got on the board first when Vega drew a foul and landed a free throw to open up the game. The scoring continued as the Titans opened up with a 5-0 run and collected 10 rebounds throughout the first period.
The Gauchos opened up the second period taking the lead and extending it to seven with back to back three-pointers from Makala Roper and Onome Jemerigbe.
The Titans were held scoreless for almost seven minutes until Vega landed a lay-up to ignite the Titan offense once again, leading them to an eight-point run to close the gap.
With only seconds left on the clock, Berry landed a buzzer-beating shot from half court to end the first half.
Fullerton trailed 24-26 at half time with Vega recording seven points while Berry put herself on track for her fifth double-double with seven points and seven rebounds after the first 20 minutes of play.
The second half started off a battle until Santa Barbara took the reins, outscoring the Titans 11-4 at the media timeout.
The Titans continued to catch up throughout the third period yet the Gauchos held their distance, ending the third quarter leading the orange and blue 44-34.
Berry hit double-digits when she hit a jumper early in the fourth period, yet Santa Barbara responded with a quick five points to hold their lead at 16.
Fullerton's 13 points in the fourth quarter wasn't enough as the Titans dropped their second Big West match 65-47 in Titan Gym.
The Titans head north to take on Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on Saturday night at 4 p.m.
