FULLERTON, Calif. – Freshman Michelle Berry recorded the second double-double of her career while Jade Vega chipped in 13 points en route to the heartbreaking 44-53 loss to San Diego in Titan Gym on Wednesday night.

The Titans (2-8) recorded a season-low in points allowed by holding the Toreros to only 53 after previously allowing 60 to Weber State.

"We're not happy with the results, we're not happy with the final outcome," said head coach Daron Park. "We didn't do enough good things tonight to win a basketball game."

The Titans fell fast as they gave up a 9-0 run to start the game and was held scoreless until five minutes in when Lauren Nubla, who was granted her first start of the season, got the Titans on the board with a layup.

Junior Sami Logan followed up quickly, adding five points for the Titans in the first period to finish out the first quarter trailing the Toreros 9-19.

The Titans gave up eight offensive rebounds to San Diego and turned the ball over seven times in the first period.

The Titans defense stepped up early in the second quarter, holding the Toreros to only 11 points compared to the 19 they scored in the first period.

Cal State Fullerton reduced their turnovers to only two which helped them score 10 points in the second period.

At the half, the Titans trailed San Diego 19-30 thanks to the freshmen trio of Vega, Nubla and Berry who all scored four points each while Berry also chipped in a team-leading five boards.

The Titans shot 30.4% from the field in the first half yet were outrebounded 12-28 by the Toreros in the first 20 minutes of play.

Vega kicked off the second half with back-to-back layups to bring her game total to eight points and put the Titans within seven. Karima Gabriel quickly chipped in a layup of her own to give the Titans a 6-0 run early in the third period.

Yet the Toreros responded with eight points of their own to regain their 13-point lead, San Diego's Malina Hood chipping in four of the eight.

After the media timeout in the third quarter, Vega hit her first three of the game to reach her fifth double-digit game this season and cut the deficit to 10.

Berry hit a last minute layup in the third period to also reach double-digits for the sixth time this season, cutting the deficit and leading the Titans to chase the Toreros 34-42 at the end of the third quarter.

Trailing by only eight heading into the final quarter, the Titans' comeback attempt was a battle as each time the Titans' scored, San Diego would answer right back. The Toreros increased their pressure on defense, forcing the Titans to five turnovers and leaving the Titans to trail by seven with just under two minutes left to play.

With just under a minute left to play, Berry grabbed her 10th rebound of the game to log the second double-double of her career.

Yet the comeback and the fight just wasn't enough as Fullerton dropped its eighth-straight game, falling 53-44 to San Diego.

"We get another chance on Sunday and hopefully we can learn this lesson once and for all," said Park. "We can come out on Sunday and play spirited and inspired and do enough things to win a basketball game."

The Titans return to the floor on Sunday afternoon as they host Eastern Washington at Titan Gym at 1 p.m.

NOTES: USD had 22 second chance points to the Titans six…  The Titans recorded a season-low with only 11 three-point attempts… In the last three games, the Titans have recorded an average of 28 points… Had a season-low seven free throw attempts… the 44 points scored tonight is the second lowest amount of points scored this season.
