Series Notes: In the last meeting, things went right down to the wire, as UC Davis' Blair Shinoda knocked down a jumper to give the Aggies a 57-55 lead with 15 seconds to play in the game. Fullerton had a chance to win it, but Chante Miles clanked a three-pointer as time expired, as Davis escaped Titan Gym with the win. Tailer Butler had a great game, going 5-of-10 from the field for 14 points and seven rebounds. However, the Titans came away with a convincing 58-50 win in the first meeting between the two schools last year. Mya Olivier had one of the best games of her career, scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 rebounds on 5-of-9 shooting...the Titans' largest margin of victory came Jan. 15, 2009 in a 71-59 (12 points) win in Davis...Fullerton's largest margin of defeat came Jan. 17, 2008 in a 77-45 (32 points) loss in Fullerton...No team has won two consecutive meetings since the Aggies defeated the Titans on Jan. 17 and Feb. 16, 2008...Three of the last four meetings have been decided by eight points or less, while two of the last four have been decided by two points each.
Assessing the Aggies
UC Davis (6-10, 1-4 Big West) comes into the game desperate for a win, as it's dropped six of its last seven contests. The Aggies currently find themselves in ninth place in the Big West, but their lone conference win came last week against co-conference leader Cal State Northridge. The Aggies are led by sophomore forward Sydnee Fipps, as she ranks second in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.4 points per game. She also leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 4.8 boards per contest. Senior guard Cortney French holds down the backcourt for UC Davis, as she averages 12.4 points per contest...the Aggies average 63.2 points per game, while they give up 69...UC Davis leads the league in steals, averaging 12 per game (tied for 28th in the nation)...the Aggies were picked to finish seventh in the Big West's preseason conference poll.

Series Notes: Cal State Fullerton had some tough luck vs. Pacific last season, as it went 0-2 vs. the Tigers, with each loss coming by just five points. Despite the losses the Titans have had some individual success vs. Pacific. Kathleen Iwuoha contributed 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting off the bench in the last meeting. Alex Thomas went for 16 points and seven rebounds in the first meeting between the two teams. Mya Olivier also was consistent, combining for 13 points and 19 rebounds over the two games...Fullerton's largest margin of victory came on Feb. 23, 1991 in a 77-52 (25 points) win in Fullerton...the Titans' largest margin of defeat came on Feb. 9, 2001 in at 92-49 (43 points) loss in Fullerton...the Titans have dropped three of their last four contest with Pacific, but all four games have been decided by five points or less...Before last season's loss to Pacific at Titan Gym, the Titans had won six straight affairs vs. the Tigers (6-1 in last seven home games).
Talking About the Tigers
Pacific (14-3, 4-1 Big West) enters the game as hot as any time in the conference, winning seven of its last eight games, with its only loss during that span being a 96-95 triple-overtime loss at Cal Poly. The Tigers' only other two losses overall came at national powerhouses Florida and Stanford. The Titans and Tigers have shared five common opponents thus far (Eastern Washington, Nevada, San Jose State, Hawai'i, and Cal State Northridge). Cal State Fullerton went 2-3 vs. those schools while Pacific went 5-0...Pacific boasts a balanced scoring attack, owning four players that average double-digit points. The Tigers are led by Kendall Rodriguez's 13.1 points per game, while Kendall Kenyon provides 12.2 points and 10.8 rebounds a contest...Pacific is the highest scoring team in the league, averaging 72.1 points per game, while it only surrenders 62.8 per contest...the Tigers were picked to finish second in the Big West's preseason conference poll.
Last Time Out For the Titans
Cal State Fullerton connected on just 12-of-63 shot attempts for a season-low 19 percent shooting from the field, as the Titans dropped a 45-39 contest to Long Beach State Saturday night in Long Beach.
For Fullerton (7-10, 3-2 Big West), it was just its second loss in its last seven affairs and it's sixth defeat by just six points or less this season.
With the win, Long Beach State (10-8, 3-3 Big West) snaps what was season-high three-game losing skid, while earning its second consecutive victory over the Titans going back to last season.
Junior guard Alex Thomas led the way for the Titans, scoring 20 points on 6-of-19 shooting, as she set a career high in the scoring column for a second consecutive game. Sophomore forward Kathleen Iwuoha also grabbed career-high 14 rebounds in the loss.
Center Devin Hudson was too much for Fullerton to handle down low, as she posted a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for the 49ers. Lauren Spargo provided relief off the bench, pouring in 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, as the only other player to score in double-figures.
Fullerton didn't hit its first field goal until the 14:29 mark of the first half when Alex Thomas connected on a mid-range jumper. Thomas went on to score the Titans' first 10 points of the contest to give Fullerton it's first lead of the game at the 12:35 mark.
Despite just shooting 8-of-34 (23.5 percent) for the first half, the Titans never trailed for the remainder of the period, as the defense forced 11 turnovers and kept the 49ers at bay, as Long Beach State connected on just 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) first-half field goal attempts. Fullerton took a slim 21-18 advantage into intermission.
While the offense really never came in the second half, the feisty Titan defense put Fullerton in a position to win the game, as it led 33-21 with 12:25 left to play in the game.
In fact, the 49ers didn't have a second-half field goal conversion until Lauren Spargo nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key with 11:05 left in the contest to trim the Fullerton lead to 33-24.
Spargo struck back once again and nailed what proved to be the biggest shot of the game, as she swished a trey as the shot clock expired to push the 49ers in front 41-38 with 1:40 left in the game. It was their first lead since the 13:35 mark of the first half.
That would be all Long Beach State needed, as the Titans were only able to muster up one more point the rest of the way.
The 49ers held the Titans without a field goal for the final 13:52 of the game and outscored Fullerton 24-6 during that same span, as the Titans went just 4-for-29 from the floor in the second half for 13.8 percent.
One to Forget About
Last Saturday at Long Beach State the Titans were held without a field goal for the final 13:52 of the game, it was the longest Fullerton had gone without scoring a field goal this season (next closest 12:56 vs. Northridge, the only other conference loss)...the Titans shot 19 percent from the field, Fullerton's worst field goal percentage since shooting 17.5 percent Jan. 22, 2011 at UC Santa Barbara...the Titans shot 15 percent from three-point land, the worst three-point shooting percentage since shooting just 10 percent Feb. 11, 2012 at Cal Poly...the 39 points were the least amount scored since putting up just 36 on Dec. 13 at Oregon State...the 84 combined points scored between the two teams is the lowest in the Big West this season.
Well, Haven't Seen This Before
Take this stat how you want to, but last Saturday's 45-39 loss at Long Beach State was the least amount of points the Titans have surrendered in a road loss all time. The 45 points surrendered was the least amount of points given up in a loss overall since losing 39-37 at home to UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 7, 2012
The Time is Now
If the Titans hope to make a real push up the Big West standings, the time is now. Fullerton is in the midst of a four-game stretch where it plays four teams with .500 conference records or worse (UC Riverside, UC Irvine, Long Beach State, and UC Davis). So far the Titans are 2-1 during this stretch...UC Davis has currently lost six out of its last seven overall and the four teams have a combined conference record of 6-16 thus far.
Winning When it Counts
Cal State Fullerton is just one of two teams in the conference to have a winning league record despite owning an overall losing mark (Hawai'i the other)...Through five Big West games the Titans lead the league in turnover margin (+3.80), rank second in offensive rebounding (16 pg), offensive rebounding percentage (.385), rank third in scoring offense (64.2 ppg), scoring margin (+4.2), steals (10.4 spg), and rank fourth in scoring defense (55.0 ppg) and free throw percentage (.716).
Bushong's Block Party
Lauren Bushong currently ranks sixth on the school's all-time block list. She currently has 64 career blocks and is two away from passing up Rochelle Ortega and Dee Braxton (65 each) for fourth on the all time list.
Riding the Hot Hand
Chante Miles led the Titans in scoring in eight of the first 12 games to start the season. Over the past five contests, four different Titans have led the team in scoring (Tailer Butler 27 points vs. Hawai'i, Chante Miles 11 points vs. Cal State Northridge, Lauren Bushong 14 points at UC Riverside, Alex Thomas 18 points vs. UC Irvine, Alex Thomas 20 points at Long Beach State).
The Amazing Alex
Alex Thomas scored a career-high 20 points, including scoring the Titans' first 10 points of the game last Saturday at Long Beach State. In fact she's now set new career scoring highs in two consecutive games going back to last Thursday vs. UC Irvine. Since Big West play began, she's led the team in scoring, averaging 14.4 points per game. She's scored 13+ points in four of her last five games, after just posting one 13+ point performance in the 12 games previous...other than Chante Miles, Thomas is the only player to lead the team in scoring in consecutive games this season.
Halfway There
We're just past the halfway mark of the regular season and the Titans are well on-pace to surpass last year's conference win total. Fullerton finished 4-12 in the Big West last season. The Titans already have three conference wins with still 14 league games to play.

What's Trending
Fullerton has committed less or the same amount of turnovers as the opposition in 13 of its last 15 games...the Titans have had more offensive rebounds than the opponent in 13 of 17 games this season...Fullerton has been outscored in the paint in 12 of its last 15 games...the Titans have had at least two double-figure scorers in six of their last seven games...Fullerton has forced 20+ turnovers in a game in four of its last five contests...Titans have won the second-chance points battle in four consecutive outings, and six out of their last seven games.
Protecting the House
Six of Cal State Fullerton's seven wins this season have come at Titan Gym (6-2)...the Titans have outscored opponents a combined 532-474 (+58) during home games this season and have lost two games by a combined two points...nearly 69 percent of the Titans' total wins since the 2005-06 season have come at home.
Is There a Lid on This Thing?
Over the course of the season, Cal State Fullerton has had field goal droughts of eight minutes or more eight separate times in eight different games. The Titans are 2-6 in those games....Four of them have been 10+ minute droughts. The Titans are 1-3 in those games. Nationally Accredited Thief
As of Jan. 23, Chante Miles ranks 54th in the nation in steals per game (2.80)...Duquesne's Jocelyn Floyd leads the nation in steals, averaging 5.25 per game... Miles' seven steals Jan. 3 vs. Hawai'i were the most by any Titan since Toni Thomas collected seven steals Nov. 20, 2007 vs. USC.
Heartbreak City
Nine of 17 games this season have been decided by six points or less. Fullerton is just 3-6 in those contests...Four games have been decided by two points or less, the Titans are 1-3 in those games...in the six losses, Fullerton either had the lead, was tied, or was within one possession with under three minutes to play...at one point this season the Titans were 2-5 but still didn't have a negative point differential (449-449).
Living Pretty in the 60's
The Titans are 6-2 when scoring 60+ points this season, compared to a 1-8 mark when scoring under 60 points...Fullerton is 4-0 when scoring between 60 and 65 points this season.
Taking Care of Business
After dropping seven consecutive games, the Titans have started to right the ship, as they've won five of their last seven games...during the seven-game stretch the Titans have averaged 60 points per game while surrendering just 54 per contest.
Doing it Right on Defense
Since giving up 83 points to Gonzaga on Dec. 9, the Titans have only surrendered 60+ points once. Opponents have averaged just 55 points on 37 percent shooting during that span (153/414).
Finding the Right Mix
Cal State Fullerton has used 10 different starting lineups and has only sent out the same starting five in consecutive games three times this season...No Titan has started in every game this season.
Miles Ahead of the Rest
Chante Miles has scored in double-figures in 12 of her first 15 games played to start the season...Miles has scored 17+ points in six of 15 games played this season...Miles currently leads the Titans in scoring (12.9 ppg), total points (194), field goals made (67), free throws made (2.5 fpg), assists (3.7 apg), steals (2.8 spg), and minutes (34.4 mpg).
Cleaning Up the Mess
Kathleen Iwuoha is making her presence felt on the glass this season. She currently leads the team in overall rebounding (8.1 rpg), offensive rebounding (3.7 rpg), and defensive rebounding (4.4 rpg). Her overall rebounding ranks sixth in the conference while her offensive rebounding ranks third and her defensive rebounding is good enough for eighth...She has averaged 11.3 rebounds over her last four games....Through five conference games she's averaged 9.6 rebounds per contest, the fourth most in the Big West.

Tailoring Greatness
Tailer Butler's 27 points scored on Jan. 3 vs. Hawai'i was the most by any Titan since Megan Richardson also posted 27 points Dec. 12, 2011 vs. San Jose State...Butler's 27 points were also the most points any Titan had produced off the bench since Lauren Chow scored 28 points Nov. 17, 2007.
Titans Ink Four Recruits for 2012-13
Head coach Marcia Foster announced on Nov. 19 that four high school seniors have signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball at Cal State Fullerton. Casey Williams, Chelsea Waddy, Samantha Logan, and Priscilla Brooks' four years of eligibility will start at the beginning of the 2013-14 academic school year.
"This is very strong class with great students and overall just great people," Foster said. "They all fit into our mold of being a hard-working bunch. We look for blue-collar kids with talent and that's what we have in this class. I expect all of these kids to be able to contribute right away next year."
All four recruits played at California high schools and are expected to play high school basketball their senior years.
Casey Williams • G • 5-8 • Sacramento High School, Calif.
Averaged 7.6 points, 2.4 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game as a junior at Sacramento High School…Is a one-year varsity letter winner…Recorded a career-high 15 points vs. Modesto Christian High School on Dec. 30, 2011…Grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds vs. Kennedy High School Feb. 2, 2012…Helped lead the Dragons to a 27-7 overall record and a 14-0 league mark in 2011-12…Sacramento advanced to the CIF Division III semifinals, beating San Marin 72-34 in round two before eventually falling to Miramonte 71-64.
Chelsea Waddy • F/C • 6-1 • Rialto Carter High School, Calif.
Averaged 12.9 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 3.4 blocks per game as a junior at Rialto Carter High School…Is a three-year varsity letter winner…Put up 18 double-digit scoring outings as a junior…Recorded 21 double-digit rebounding performances last season, including 10 consecutive 10+ rebound games from Nov. 30- Dec. 29, 2011…Led her team in points per game (12.9), total points (336), field goals made (114), Free throws made (104), free throws attempted (151), blocked shots per game (3.4), total blocked shots (89), rebounds per game (12.2), and total rebounds (317) last season.
Samantha Logan • G/F • 5-9 • Centennial High School, Calif.
Averaged 7.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.2 steals per game as a junior at Centennial High School...Is a three-year varsity letter winner...Led Centennial in rebounds per game (9.2) and total rebounds (240) last season…Put up 23 points (career high) and 16 rebounds Dec. 3, 2011 vs. Rialto High School…Recorded a career-high 25 rebounds Feb. 19, 2011 vs. California High School her sophomore year… Helped lead the Huskies to a CIF Division-I playoff birth both her sophomore and junior years, including a quarterfinal appearance two seasons ago.
Other Notes: Her father, Matt Logan is currently the head coach of Centennial High School's football team. Samantha played in one of Centennial's football games last October. She suited up at quarterback and completed a pass vs. Roosevelt High School in Centennial's annual "Pink Game" (The purpose of wearing pink was to raise awareness for breast cancer). Both her and the receiver she completed the pass to lost their mothers due to breast cancer. She has a goal of becoming the first ever female in California to throw a high school touchdown pass.
Priscilla Brooks • C/F • 5-10 • JW North High School, Calif.
Averaged 15.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.1 blocks, and 1.7 steals as a junior at JW North High School…Is a one-year varsity letter winner… Recorded 26 double-digit scoring performances, including a streak 15 consecutive double-digit games…Pulled down double-digit rebounds 13 times last season…Recorded a career-high 26 rebounds March 10, 2012 vs. Monache High School…Put in a career-high 30 points Feb. 1, 2012 vs. Roosevelt High School…Helped lead JW North to a 31-6 overall record, 12-2 league mark, and a trip to the CIF Division-II championship game after the school totaled just four wins (one league win) a year ago.
2012-13 Tip-Off Fundraiser a Success
The Cal State Fullerton women's basketball team hosted over 100 fans and raised money for the program at the team's third-annual Tip-Off Party and Fundraiser last Saturday night at the Student Pavilion on campus.
"It was a great evening and we really thank everyone who came out to support us," said head coach Marcia Foster. "We can't wait to make everyone proud."
The evening consisted of a raffle drawing, silent auction, fun dancing, and great food.
Breaking Down the Titans
Cal State Fullerton returns two starters and seven letterwinners overall from last season's squad that finished 11-19 overall and 4-12 in the Big West Conference, good enough for eighth place. The Titans were the No. 8 seed in last year's conference tournament, falling to top-seeded Cal Poly in the opening round for a second consecutive season, 71-53.
A new era of Fullerton basketball begins after the team says goodbye to two of the top three scorers from a year ago in Megan Richardson (16.1 ppg) and Lauren Chow (8.1 ppg) due to
graduation. However, the Titans will have some stability with the return 2012 All-Big West honorable mention Mya Olivier who returns as the team's leading rebounder (7.4 rpg) from a season ago. Twenty-six game starter Kathleen Iwuoha also returns looking to build off a solid freshman campaign where she averaged 5.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
My-oh-Mya
After suffering a season-ending injury early into the 2010-11 season, she rebounded in a positive manner last year, finishing as the team's leading rebounder (7.4 rpg) and second on the team in scoring (8.8 ppg) in addition to earning a Big West Honorable Mention...Olivier started her first game of the season Nov. 23 vs. Georgetown.

Titans Tabbed 10th in Big West Media Poll
The Cal State Fullerton women's basketball team was picked to finish 10th in the 2012-13 Big West Conference race according to a vote of league media members released by the conference office on Oct. 24.
The Titans received 29 points to finish just behind Orange County rival UC Irvine, which was ninth with 65 points. Cal State Northridge managed to edge out Pacific as the favorite to take home the conference crown with six first place votes and 161 points overall. Pacific was tabbed second with 159 points (five first place votes), UC Santa Barbara third with 153 points (three first place votes), Cal Poly fourth with 127 votes (one first place vote), Long Beach State fifth with 116 points (one first place vote), Hawai'i sixth with 81 points, UC Davis seventh with 80 first place votes, and UC Riverside eighth with 74 points.
Filling in the Holes
Cal State Fullerton returns just 52 percent of its 1,830 points scored, 60 percent of its rebounds, 53 percent of its field goals made, 28 percent of its three-pointers made, 61 percent of its free throws made, 43 percent of its assists, and 63 percent of its steals from a season ago.
New Kids on the Block
The Titans bring in four new faces to this year's squad, but only two true freshmen compared to the seven that joined last year's team. The Titans welcome Brianna Barfield (TR, Citrus JC), Xava Grooms (TR, Utah State), Briana Hubbard (FR), and Annie Park (FR).
You Can't Teach Tall
This year's Titan squad could be one of the tallest in recent memory; featuring six players listed at 6-feet or taller –tied for the tallest Fullerton squad since the 2007-08 team listed seven players taller than 6-foot.
Tourney Tested
The Titans will face a schedule loaded with postseason participants in 2011-12 as they will face three (with a fourth possible depending upon the outcome of the Cal Classic Nov. 23- 24th) NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago (Georgetown, Gonzaga, Big West rival UC Santa Barbara, and possibly California) as well as five WNIT teams from 2011-12 in Oregon State, Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Pacific, and UC Davis for a total of at least eight tournament teams. That matches the amount faced last season.
Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Cal State Fullerton boasts a rigorous 12-game non-conference schedule that includes one neutral contest against a team hovering near the AP preseason top 25 rankings in No. 33 Georgetown. Depending upon the outcome of the first game of the Cal Classic (Nov. 23- Nov. 24th) the Titans could also square off against No. 13 California in Berkeley. Seven of the Titans' 12 non-conference affairs will be played away from Titan Gym. Gonzaga is also ranked 29th in the USA Today preseason coaches poll (California 15th, Georgetown 30th).
California Dreamin'
All 14 players on the roster call California home. Twelve of the 14 players are from Southern California while two are from up north. All three assistant coaches completed their undergraduate degrees at Southern California institutions as well. (Lori Morris at San Diego, Jorge Cerna at San Diego State, and Monica Quan at Concordia)
Fullerton's Fountian of Youth
The Titans come into the 2012-13 season tied for the sixth youngest team in Division I basketball, with the team's average experience being one year per player. The program holds five freshman, five sophomores, three juniors (with one being a JC transfer in Brianna Barfield), and one senior. The Titans have lost three starters from last year's squad in senior Megan Richardson, senior Lauren Chow, and junior Alicya Crisp. Sophomore center Jasmine Grayson left the program as well
Aloha Hawai'i!
The Big West Conference welcomes the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team back to the league for its second stint as a Big West women's basketball participant. The Rainbow Wahine were members of the Big West from 1984-1996.
Cal State Fullerton will play 18 conference games (one home, one away vs. Hawai'i added) instead of the traditional 16 games as has been done in years past. The Titans will still play 29 regular season games, two non-conference games have been subtracted. The top eight teams in the conference will still qualify for the Big West Tournament.
