Nine Newcomers for Soccer

Fullerton, Calif. - Eight high school seniors and one community college transfer comprise the initial group of incoming players for the 2010 Cal State Fullerton men's soccer team.

Seven of the nine hail from the Los Angeles basin, one is from San Diego and one is from Utah. Four play for U.S. Soccer Development Academy teams.

The college transfer is NJCAA Division III All-American Willie Lopez from Rio Hondo College in Whittier. The Foothill Conference Most Valuable Player is a striker and midfielder who also plays for the Orange County Blue Stars.

Academy products are defender John Atkinson, defender Brian Godinez and midfielder Spencer Johnson from the L.A. Galaxy Youth Academy and forward Anthony Rosales from the San Diego Surf Youth Academy, who also played for Patrick Henry High School in San Diego. Other high school players are Joshua Corona from Mater Dei, Treyvonne James from Diamond Ranch, Thomas Loomis from Brighton HS in Sandy, Utah; and Jesse Vega from La Serna HS in Whittier.

Atkinson won a CIF and state title his sophomore year with Santa Margarita. He is fresh from a 10-day trip to England to play with the L.A. Galaxy Academy team.

Corona was ranked among the top 10 players in Orange County. He was the offensive player of the year in the Trinity League and gained first-team All-CIF Div. I honors for an 18-3-7 club that reached the CIF quarterfinals.

Godinez also was on the Galaxy's 10-day trip to England. He was a member of the Cal South State team and Region IV team before joining the Galaxy.

James twice earned All-Miramonte League honors and spent two weeks last summer playing in the Northern Ireland Milk Cup.

Johnson led Palos Verdes to a CIF title as an All-CIF sophomore before going to the Galaxy. He also was on the 10-day trip to England.

Loomis today was selected the Gatorade Boys Soccer Player of the Year for the state of Utah. Both his Brighton HS and Inter FC club won state titles. He also played with the Real Salt Lake Academy U-17 team.

Rosales was the player of the year in the Eastern League in 2008 and a first-team selection in 2009.
