Men's Soccer Signs Six Newcomers

Men's Soccer Signs Six Newcomers

March 8, 2007

Fullerton, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton second-year men's soccer Coach Bob Ammann has received six signed national letters of intent from newcomers to the TItans' program for 2007.

Defender T.J. Detviler from Orange Lutheran High School in Orange; forward Charles Hines from San Jacinto Community College in Houston, Texas; forward/midfielder Andres Jarquin from Guatemala City, Guatemala; defender Armando Padilla, Jr., from West Covina High School; midfielder Anthony Terrazas from Irvine High School; and forward Juan Tolento from Santa Ana Valley High School are the newcomers.

"We are extremely happy to announce these six signings and welcome them into the Titan Soccer Family," said Ammann. "The focus of our recruiting this year was up front and in the back -- getting players who could score goals and those that took pride in defending. We feel that all six of these players will enhance and push the current squad while vying for playing time immediately.

"With the graduation of Eugene Brooks, the 2006 Big West Conference's leading scorer, we needed to find someone who could step in and be a presence up front. We feel we have done that with the 6-foot, 5-inch Hines . Not only is Charles a big body and obvious threat in the air, but he has two very good feet and will fit in well with our style of play.

"Tolento is an incredibly gifted soccer player who has the ability to put the ball in the back of the net. He scored 47 goals in 26 games on the way to being selected high school player of the year in 2006. We originally signed Juan last year but, unfortunately, he was not able to get admitted. He will press for starting time immediately.

"Jarquin is an extremely talented offensive player who comes with a large amount of experience having played with the Guatemalan Senior National team and being capped five times. He will be able to break down defenses on the dribble while being a scoring threat with his shot. He gives us a lot of flexibility with his ability to play in midfield or up front.

"Detviler is a very good defender. He possesses great speed and has a tenacity that opposing attackers will discover. He is very difficult to beat and will shore us up in the back. TJ was recently named the MVP of the High School All-Star game.

"Terrazas is a local player out of the Pateadores Soccer club. Tony's got a great workmanlike attitude and competitiveness. A tough, gritty defender, he can play either in the back or as a defensive mid. He and TJ are club teammates.

"Padilla is a defensive left sided player. Armando also has extensive experience playing in midfield so he will be able to threaten up the left flank playing out of the back. His ability on the ball will link well with our midfield players. Armando plays club soccer with the Irvine Strikers.

"We are still waiting to announce additional signings as well as having available a number of very talented players who will be walking on as non- scholarship players this Fall"
