Fullerton, Calif. - Gustavo Villalobos scored two goals and assisted on the third Saturday night to lead Cal State Northridge to a 3-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the Matadors' Big West Conference men's soccer opener.

Northridge improved to 2-6-1 while Fullerton, which was coming off a 1-0 win over defending champion UC Santa Barbara, fell to 2-5-2 and 1-1-0.

After scoring only three goals in an 0-6-1 start, the Matadors have tallied seven in the last two matches, beating Air Force (4-0) and Fullerton (3-0). The Matadors controlled this game from the start and ultimately outshot the hosts, 18-6, and had the edge in cornerkicks, 11-3.

Michael Abalos logged his second shutout of the season in goal but needed to make only 3 saves. Fullerton's Trevor Whiddon had 4 saves.

Villalobos put the Matadors ahead in the 17th minute with a drive from the left almost parallel to the end line, kicking the ball through Whiddon. His pass set up Rene Anguiano for a second goal in the 31st minute, a blast from the top of the box.

Northridge added its final goal in the 69th minute when Villalobos converted a nifty pass from Rafael Garcia with a blast from near the top of the penalty box aat a slight angle to the right.

Fullerton has a rematch with UC Santa Barbara in Goleta on Wednesday night while the Matadors travel to Cal Poly SLO.
