RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton men's soccer team claimed the Big West South Division title with a 2-0 shutout victory at UC Riverside on Saturday night.
Freshmen Ross McPhie and Carlos Troncoso both scored goals while Titan goalkeeper David Rodriguez Elias recorded four saves en route to his 11th shutout of the season.
The Titans improve to 11-7-1 and 6-3-1 in the Big West to crown Fullerton as the South Division champions.
Fullerton got on the board within the first 10 minutes of the match when Robert Coronado crossed from the left side to find McPhie who headed it in off the left post to put the Titans ahead 1-0.
Great defense by the Titans in combination with three stops from Elias held the Highlanders scoreless for the rest of the half.
Only three minutes into the second half, Coronado recorded his second assist of the match when he combined with Ruben Alvarez to find Troncoso who shot it into the far post to seal the deal for the Titans to lead them to the 2-0 shutout.
Fullerton outshot the Highlanders 13-10 while tying in corners with 8. Diego Sanchez led the Titans with four shots on the night, two of them being on goal.
The South Division title gives Fullerton the no. 1 seed in the South for the Big West Tournament, giving them a bye and landing them in the semi finals on Wednesday, November 11. Fullerton will face the winner of the UC Irvine/Cal Poly game played on Saturday, November 7th.
NOTES: This is the first time in Cal State Fullerton history that the Titans have won the regular season Big West title… Fullerton now leads UC Riverside overall 17-11-6…. Elias logged his 11th shutout of 2015, putting him atop the all time leaderboard by two… The freshmen have accumulated 11 of the 25 goals this season… The six Big West wins this season is the most the Titans have had as a part of the Big West since they recorded six back in 1991.
