ELK GROVE, Calif. – It was a great day, and a great tournament for the Titans: Derek Castillo was the tourney medalist, and Jack Dyer, Dalton Daniel and Matt Rafter finished in the top-ten, as the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team became the back-to-back champions of the Sacramento State Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
The Titans ran away with the tourney, winning by 23 strokes over ten other teams, including fellow-Big West competitors, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, CSUN and UC Riverside. The Titans finished the competition with a two-over par score of 866. Fullerton golfers combined for a blistering 11-under par day to stifle their competition.
Derek Castillo started the day three strokes behind the leader, teammate Jack Dyer. Castillo finished Tuesday's round with a sizzling four-under par, 68 to win the championship with a final three-round score of one-under par, 215. In February, Castillo was the champion of the Orange County Collegiate Classic.
All of the Titans golfers produced solid rounds on Tuesday: Jack Dyer shot a one-over par, 73 to finish in third place. Dalton Daniel logged a two-under par round, 70 to finish in fourth place. Matt Rafter also posted a 70 to finish in 6th place, and Garrett Boe shot a three-under par, 69 to move up to 16th place.
Trevor McNary and Jess Scheller, playing as individuals, finished tied for 39th place with 17-over par, 233's.
The tournament was played at the par 72, 6,514-yard Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove, Calif. Next up for the Titans is the Grand Canyon University Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. The tournament runs from Friday, March 13 through Saturday, March 14.
