Titans Remain in Seventh After Day Two at Big West Championship

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team improved by four strokes in the second day of competition, but remain in seventh place at the Big West Championship at the SLO Country Club on Monday.

The Titans recorded a second-round mark of 296 (+16) for a 36-hole total of 596 (+36), and trail UC Davis (+13, 573), UC Irvine (+15, 575), UC Riverside (+15, 575), Cal Poly (+25, 585) and Long Beach State (+27, 587) to be nine strokes behind the top five squads.

Senior Ryan Tetrault, who shot a 2-over 72 on the afternoon, moved up six slots to crack the top 20 in a tie for 17th position, leading the Titans with a 36-hole mark of 8-over 148 on Monday. Tetrault has sunk four birdies and tallied 22 holes at par or better thus far into the event.

UC Irvine's Pete Fernandez and UC Riverside's David Gazzolo are in a heated battle for the individual medalist honors as both carded a day two tally of 1-over 141, respectively. Another trio of golfers are just two strokes off the lead as UC Davis' Mike Brockington and Luke Vivolo along with Cal Poly's Justin De Los Santos sit at 3-over 143 to round out the top five on the individual leaderboard.

Cal State Fullerton sophomore Kyle De Silva and senior Josh Park complete the trio of Titans in the top 25 as the duo are just one stroke behind Tetrault and sit in a tie for 24th with a total score of 149 (+9), respectively. De Silva turned in a 4-over 74 second-round and leads the Titans with five birdies while Park carded a 7-over 77 over this afternoon's 18 holes.

CSF freshman Mark Cobey (+11, 151) chalked up a second-round of 73 (+3), while Santiago Canyon College transfer Nico Mendoza (+15, 155) fired a 78 (+8) to round out the Titan contingency for ties in 30th and 38th place, respectively.

The final round of the 2015 Big West Men's Golf Championship gets underway Tuesday, April 28 with split tee times.  Cal Poly, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara tee off at 7:30 from hole one while Cal State Fullerton, CSUN and Hawai'i start on the 10th hole at 7:25 a.m. The final group, comprised of UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC Riverside gets underway at 8:20 a.m. from the first tee.

Post Season Notes: The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I men's regionals which are held at six sites this year from May 14-16. This year's regional sites include Bremerton, Wash, Chapel Hill, N.C., Lubbock, Texas, New Haven, Conn., Noblesville, Ind. and San Diego, Calif. The six-day NCAA Men's Golf Championship is scheduled for May 29-June 3 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
