FULLERTON, Calif.- Plagued by a weather delay in the early morning and the suspension of the second round due to darkness, the Cal State Fullerton men's golf team finished its first round of competition in 19th place in the Bill Cullum Invitational at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif., on Monday. The second round will resume tomorrow prior to the final 18-holes.
The Titans recorded a first round 297 (+9) and trail USC (-13, 275), UC Irvine (-10, 278), Pepperdine (-10, 278), Arizona State (-9, 279), and Southern Utah (-7, 281) to round out the top-five. Fullerton is currently 11-strokes out of the top-10.
Carding a first round tally of 73 (+1), Cal State Fullerton's Mark Cobey led the Titans for a tie in 51st place. The freshman from Woodland, Calif., made his first appearance on the links since the opening tournament of the season, the Southwestern Intercollegiate (Sept. 8-9) in which he placed 55th overall (73-76-81—230, +17).
USC's Rico Hoey holds the lead in the individual standings at 7-under-par 65, followed by Pepperdine's Anthony Cecere (-6, 66), capped off by an eight-way tie for third place to round out the lead pack of golfers.
Fullerton senior Ryan Tetrault and sophomore Kyle De Silva both shot a first round of 2-over-par 74 to finish tied for 61st place, respectively.
Participating in his second event of the season for the Titans, Orange Coast College transfer Marcus Mercado-Kiel fired a first round 4-over-par 76, setting the Santa Ana, Calif., native in a tie for 78th in the standings.
Also competing in his second tournament of the 2014-15 season was junior Mark Jensma who completed the five-man Titan rotation, tallying a first round score of 78 (+6). The Aliso Viejo, Calif., native wrapped up his afternoon in 93rd place.
The remainder of the second round, followed by the final 18-holes of the Bill Cullum Invitational will conclude tomorrow at the Wood Ranch Golf Club, a par-72, at 7:00 a.m.
