Anguiano Paces Titans into First After Day One at BWC Championships

SAN JACINTO, Calif.- The Cal State Fullerton men's golf team finished its first day of competition in first place in the Big West Championships at the Soboba Springs Country Club in San Jacinto, Calif., on Sunday. Fullerton's Mark Anguiano concludes the day in second place on the individual leaderboard.


The Titans shot 287 to finish 1-under-par after the first round of play. Heading into the final 36 holes, Fullerton is currently two strokes in the lead.


After day one, the Titans are followed by UC Davis (+1, 289), Hawai'i (+2, 290), Long Beach State (+7, 295), and CSU Northridge (+7, 295) to round out the top-five.


With a total score of 68 (-4) through the first round, senior Anguiano trails Matt Hansen 67 (-5) of UC Davis by one-stroke on the individual leaderboard. The Whittier, Calif., native marked his his 16th round in the 60's to compliment his Big West low 69.66 scoring average.


Junior Ryan Tetrault also finished within the top-10, shooting a first round of even-under-par 72, tied for seventh place. Tetrault is currently four strokes behind team leader Anguiano.

 

Freshman Kyle De Silva concluded the first round shooting 1-over-par 73, tied for 12th on the leaderboard.

 

Marking his second consecutive participation on the five-man rotation for team competition in the spring, senior Scott Rubzin fired a first round 2-over-par 74, good for a tie in 15th place. Fellow senior Corey Gard joins Rubzin for 15th in the standings after shooting an identical first round score of 74 (+2), to round out the Titans after the first day of competition.


The next 18 holes of the Big West Championships will continue tomorrow at the Soboba Springs Country Club, a par 72, at 7:30 a.m.

 

Post Season Notes: The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I men's regionals which are held at six sites - Auburn University Club (Auburn, Ala.), Lonnie Pool Golf Course (Raleigh, N.C.), The Club at Old Hawthorne (Columbia, Mo.), Briggs Ranch Golf Club (San Antonio, Texas), Eugene Country Clun (Eugene, Ore.), Rich Harvest Farms (Sugar Grove, Ill.).  The six-day NCAA Men's Golf Championship is scheduled for May 23-28 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.  Selections for the regionals is slated for Monday, May 5 at 7:00 a.m. (PDT) on the Golf Channel.
