May 2, 2007

Fullerton, Calif. - Andy Newman has been promoted to associate head coach for Cal State Fullerton men's basketball by fifth-year Head Coach Bob Burton.

Newman, 32, has been Burton's assistant at CSF the past four years and earlier worked with him at Fresno State. He also was an assistant coach and player for Burton at West Valley College in Saratoga.

"Andy has been an integral part of turning this program around," said Burton, who is 68-51 in four seasons at Fullerton. "It's most deserving that he gets the title and additional responsibilities. He's really good."

Newman played two seasons at West Valley at point guard and later played at Southern Utah and Azusa Pacific, where he graduated in 1998 with a degree in business administration after a 34-5 season with the Cougars. At West Valley his teams were 65-6 as a player.

As a coach at West Valley he was the recruiting coordinator, offensive coach and was in charge of perimeter skill development. He later worked one year at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa and then was basketball operations manager for one season at Fresno State.

At Fullerton he has handled individual skill development, on-the-floor coaching and offensive play calling, recruiting, game strategy and opponent preparation.
