Bobby "L.B." Brown is the focal point of the revived Cal State
Fullerton basketball program... As point guard, he's the
quarterback running the offense... As a prolific 3-point-field-goal
shooter, he's a scoring threat from almost any spot on the floor...
And as a recruiter, he has helped lure other former Westchester
High School and Los Angeles products to his side... He's the first
Cal State Fullerton player to explore the NBA draft and then
withdraw to retain his eligibility after working out with Phoenix
(twice), the Clippers and the Lakers and attending the NBA
Pre-Draft Camp in Orlando... If he stays healthy, the three-year
letterman has a good chance to become the Titans' all-time leading
scorer during the 2006-07 season... He currently ranks No. 6 with
1,415 points compared to 1,876 by record holder Leon Wood... Brown
ranks No. 4 in career assists with 378 but is more than 300 behind
leader Wood... Selected the Freshman of the Year by the rival
coaches in the Big West Conference in 2003-04, Brown earned
honorable mention status in 2004-05 and he made the all-conference
first team in 2005-06... He also was one of 150 players nationally
to make an NABC All-District team, gaining second-team honors in
District 15 with Louis Armundson of UNLV, Kevin Kruger of Arizona
State, Matthew Knight of LMU and Nick Lewis of USD (the first team
was Hassan Adams of Arizona, Jordan Farmar and Aaron Afflalo of
UCLA and Nick Young and Gabe Pruitt of USC)... Brown holds the
school record for career 3-point field goals with 227... His .789
career free-throw percentage ranks seventh in school history...
Prior to the 2005-06 season he was ranked by Lindy's the top
playmaker and the top NBA prospect in the Big West Conference.
CSF IN 2005-06: For the second year in a row he was the most
productive offensive player in the Big West Conference... And for
the second year in a row he came up four points shy of leading the
conference in scoring... He finished at 17.5 points per game to
trail only Pacific's Christian Maraker at 17.6 ppg... Brown also
was No. 2 in assists at 4.55 per game behind UC Irvine's Aaron
Fitzgerald at 6.55... Bobby ranked third in 3-point field goals
made at 2.48 as his total of 72 ranked fifth best in school
history... Twice he was selected Big West player of the week (Dec.
26 and Jan. 2)... He made a pair of all-tournament teams with 32
points and 15 assists in two games at USF and 54 points and 5
assists in two games at Florida International... He averaged just
under 35 minutes per game... An ankle injury suffered in overtime
on Jan. 19 vs. Long Beach State hobbled him for two games vs. UC
Irvine and he also overcame a sore shoulder... He failed to score
in double figures only four times (9, 7, 9 and 8 points)...
Finished the season strong, averaging 17.1 points and 6.6 assists
as the Titans went 6-3 in the final nine games... Second to
teammate Frank Robinson in the Big West in steals with 1.55 per
game... Matched his career high with 30 points in losing effort vs.
Texas-San Antonio on Dec. 28 at Florida International Tournament...
Most impressive moments of season came on Nov. 23 when he
personally outscored Pepperdine, 10-0, to turn a 60-57 deficit into
a 67-60 lead on the way to a 76-66 victory.
CSF IN 2004-05: Was the most productive offensive player in the
Big West Conference when you combine scoring and assists
averages... With four more points he would have surpassed teammate
Ralphy Holmes for the Big West scoring title, finishing third at
16.81 points per game behind Holmes (16.92) and Idaho's Dandrick
Jones (16.83)... Brown also was third in assists at 4.66 per game
behind UC Irvine's Aaron Fitzgerald (5.24) and Utah State's Spencer
Nelson (4.75)... Brown was second in 3-point field goals made (2.66
per game to 2.72 by UCI's Ross Schraeder) and third in free-throw
percentage (.827), seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio and eighth
in steals... Averaged about 36 minutes per game and left the floor
in post-season for only the final minute out of a possible 205
minutes... Played all 45 minutes in the dramatic overtime win at
Oregon State in the NIT... His 85 3-point field goals (in 244
attempts, .348) were the second best total in a season by a Titan
(Don Leary made 89 in 1992-93)... Matched his career single-game
best with 7 (in 11 attempts) at San Diego State on Dec. 21... Had
career-high 30 points in overtime win at Eastern Washington on Dec.
10... Had double figures in assists on three occasions topped by
career-best 13 vs. Hope International on Nov. 27... Twice selected
Big West Conference Player of the Week -- on Dec. 13 for his
30-point effort at Eastern Washington and on Feb. 21 after totaling
37 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists in home wins over Idaho and
Utah State... Failed to score in double figures only three times...
His total of 538 points was the eighth-best season by a Titan...
His .827 free-throw percentage was fifth best.
CSF IN 2003-04: Had the best freshman season by a Titan since
Tony Neal in 1981-82, the last time a Fullerton player won
conference freshman of the year honors... Brown averaged 13.2
points per game (Neal averaged only 10.9 ppg) to go with 3.5
assists and 2.0 rebounds... Was No. 10 scorer in the Big West
Conference and No. 2 in 3-point field goals with 70 (in 173
attempts, .405), No. 4 in assists and No. 5 in assist-to-turnover
ratio... Shot 85 percent from the foul line, making his final 19
free throw attempts over a 10-game span.... His 70 treys tied for
fourth best (then) in a Fullerton season... Signaled what kind of a
true freshman he would be with 22 points at Pepperdine on Dec. 1
and then poured in a season-high 27 in an overtime loss at USC,
hitting 10 of 18 shots including 5 of 9 3-pointers... Made 7 of 12
treys vs. UCSB on Feb. 26... Twice had 7 assists in a game, vs.
Eastern Washington on Dec. 13 and vs. Long Beach State on Feb.
14... Was selected Big West Player of the Week (Dec. 8)... Had a
slump late in the first round of conference play, totaling only 21
points over a 4-game span... But erupted for 24 points vs. UC
Irvine on Feb. 12 (6 of 9 treys) and finished strong... Appeared in
all 28 games, 13 as a starter, but came off the bench the final 10
games... Made 24 of 41 (.585) treys after going 0-for-9 on
season-opening road trip to Arizona.
WESTCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL: As a senior averaged 15 points and 7
assists for Coach Ed Azzam's Comets... Earned fourth-team all-state
honors, second-team all-city selection by the Daily Breeze and
second-team all-area status... In the playoffs he averaged 19
points and 8 assists... Two-year varsity letterman as Westchester
won back-to-back Div. I state championships and a mythical national
championship.
