IRVINE, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton guard Khalil Ahmad was voted the 2015-16 Big West Conference Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year, as voted on by the league's nine coaches, it was announced today.

In addition, Ahmad received all-Big West honorable mention recognition along with teammate Tre' Coggins.

Ahmad is the third Cal State Fullerton student-athlete, and first since Bobby Brown in 2003-04, to be bestowed with the Freshman of the Year honor. The 6-foot-4 guard broke Brown's single-season freshman scoring record of 369, and has scored 424 points for the Titans.

Ahmad's 14.6 points per game average ranks second on the squad this season and seventh in the Big West Conference as the rookie has reached double figures on 22 occasions and has led the Titans in scoring eight times.

In addition, Ahmad's .778 free-throw percentage (112-of-144) ranks ninth in the league.

The Corona, Calif., native has increased his scoring averaging in Big West Conference games only, leading the Titans with 15.1 points per game as the league's top scoring freshman.

Coggins, named Big West honorable mention, is the Titans' leading scorer averaging 16.1 points per game, which ranks third in the Big West Conference.

The San Juan Capistrano, Calif., native, also ranks in the league's top 10 for free-throw percentage (3rd, .853) and three-pointers made per game (2nd, 2.7).

The redshirt junior transfer from Air Force has been named Big West Player of the Week on two occasions, has totaled 20 double-figure scoring games while leading the Titans with nine games of 20 points or more. He has also led the team in scoring 12 times.

Coggins' 41-point effort vs. CSUN on Jan. 9, is also the highest scoring total for any player in the Big West Conference this season.

The Titans (10-19, 3-13 BWC) are the No. 8 seed in this week's Big West Tournament, and will play No. 1 seed and co-Big West regular season champion Hawai'i at 2:30 p.m., Thursday from Honda Center in quarterfinal action. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Prime Ticket.

Hawai'i junior Stefan Jankovic earned Big West Player of the Year honors with UH's Eran Ganot notching Coach of the Year accolades. Nick Faust of Long Beach State collected the Newcomer of the Year award.
