FULLERTON, Calif. – Freshman Jared Brandon scored a career-high 16 points to lead six teammates in double figures and host Cal State Fullerton led wire-to-wire on Friday night as the Titans posted a 106-60 victory over San Diego Christian College in their 2012-13 home opener at Titan Gym.
The win was the third-straight for Fullerton (3-2 overall), which shot 57 percent from the floor and 41 percent from three-point range in the rout. The Hawks, an NAIA school and member of the Golden State Athletic Conference, fell to 0-4 in exhibitions against Division I schools this season as the game did not count toward their overall record.
Brandon, whose previous career high was 13 points at Stanford to open the season, finished 6-of-9 from the field to go with four rebounds in 25 minutes. All five starters were in double figures for the Titans as junior Marquis Horne became the first Fullerton player with a double-double this season, adding 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Sammy Yeager (15 points), D.J. Seeley (15), Kwame Vaughn (12), Alex Harris (10), and Deuce Johnson (10) all shared the wealth as 10 of the 12 players who entered the game scored.
Andy Saharan and Derek Dickerson each finished with nine points to lead San Diego Christian.
The contest was tied only once, at 2-2 a minute in, and the Hawks never got closer than a point at 5-4 at the 18-minute mark. At one point, the teams combined for eight consecutive makes from three-point range, but a 15-0 run by the Titans broke open what was a seven-point lead to make it 51-29 with 3:45 to play.
Fullerton, which shot just over 64 percent in the opening half en route to a 56-32 halftime lead, then used another lengthy run, this one a 12-0 burst, early in the second half that upped their advantage to 35 points and the Titans never looked back.
Cal State Fullerton slashed its way to a 54-20 advantage in points in the paint and turned up the heat on the defensive end, taking 19 Hawks' turnovers and turning them into 30 points. The Titans also held a 50-37 advantage on the boards.
After emerging victorious in its home opener, Fullerton returns to the road next weekend for a pair of contests in the Pacific Northwest, travelling to face Eastern Washington on Friday (Nov. 30) at 6:05 p.m. before heading to Seattle to take on Washington on Sunday (Dec. 2) at 4 p.m. in a game to be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
