June 25, 2009

Cary, NC - Cal State Fullerton All-American shortstop Christian Colon headlines the 2009 US National Team (Collegiate) roster which was announced Wednesday night by USA Baseball.

The National Team is comprised of the top non-draft-eligible college players in the United States with this year's roster forming after 10 days of trials at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

Colon (Corona, Calif., Canyon HS) is the only returning player from last year's 24-0 gold medal team and becomes the first Titan to ever return to Team USA's colleigate team for two consecutive years. Former Titan standouts Mark Kotsay (OF), Brian Loyd (C) and Phil Nevin (INF) all played with USA Baseball for two consecutive years, but each spent their second season as Olympians.

Colon led the 2008 National Team in hits (t-26) and stolen base (5) while hitting .263 with a home run and 14 RBI as a freshman.

In his sophomore season as a Titan, Colon hit a solid .357 and led the team with 91 hits. He also belted eight home runs, drove in 40 and stole 15 bases as the team's leadoff hitter. He was one of five finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award (an honor going to the nation's top shortstop) and was also a Big West Conference Honorable Mention.

In 2009 the National Team will play in two international friendship series in North Carolina against the Canadian and Guatemalan National Teams before heading to Japan (USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series) and Prince George, British Columbia, Canada (World Baseball Challenge).

The team will begin its summer season tonight (June 25) at 7:05 ET, opening the five-game series against the Canadian National Team in Cary, North Carolina.
