IRVINE, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball scored four runs in two different innings on its way to defeating UC Irvine 9-5 Sunday afternoon to secure the series victory. With the win the Titans improve to 8-8 and 2-1 in Big West play.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first two innings of play, the Titans scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Colby Wallace led off the inning with a single before a Jack Haley sacrifice bunt pushed him to second. Carter White then reached on a throwing error by UCI to give the Titans runners on first and third with one out.
Maddox Latta came through for the Titans as he's been doing all season long, recording an RBI base hit through the right side of the infield to bring home Wallace and get Fullerton on the board.

One batter later, Caden Connor singled up the middle to score White before a fielding error in the outfield allowed Latta to come home and give the Titans the lead. Zach Lew capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Connor and put Fullerton up 4-2.

Peyton Jones was clutch out of the bullpen for the Titans, coming into the game in the third inning with the bases loaded and one out. Jones got two quick outs to get the Titans out of the jam and give the team the momentum.

Jones went on to pitch 5.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on one hit while walking two and striking out three batters. Jones earned the win for the Titans to improve to 2-0 on the year.
In 19 innings pitched this season, Jones has a 3.32 ERA with a career-high 23 strikeouts. He had 19 strikeouts in 29 innings last season.
UC Irvine scored one run in the bottom half of the fourth inning to pull within one run, 4-3.
Fullerton got one run back in the top of the sixth inning. Connor started the inning with a walk before a sacrifice bunt by Lew pushed him to second. With two outs Brendan Bobo singled through the right side of the infield to bring home Connor and put the Titans up 5-3.

The Titans have shown they are never dead in an inning this season, scoring 35 times with two outs in an inning.
Fullerton pulled away in the eighth inning, putting up another four spot to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Connor started the inning with another walk to give the Titans a base runner. Connor went 1-for-3 on the day with three runs and two walks.
With the bases loaded and two outs Wallace blooped a single to left field to score Connor and Nankil and give the Titans a 7-3 lead. Wallace had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Haley then had an RBI double before a White RBI single put the Titans up 9-3.

UC Irvine scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it a 9-5 game before Jojo Ingrassio shut the door on the Anteaters.
The Titans look to carry their momentum into Tuesday's midweek game at LMU. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PT.
