FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball dropped both games of its doubleheader to Michigan Sunday at Goodwin Field by final score of 9-5 and 7-3. The Titans are now 2-4 on the year.
Game 1
The Titans fell behind in the top of the second inning as Jack Van Remortel doubled to right center field to drive in one run and put Michigan up 1-0. =
Fullerton tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI double by Caden Connor to bring home JT Navyac.
The Wolverines regained the lead in the fourth inning on a three-run home run by Greg Pace Jr. to give them a 4-1 lead before scoring one run in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-1.
Connor would once again drive Navyac on an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut into Michigan's lead. Connor went 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI.
Michigan scored one run in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a 9-2 lead. The Titans made an attempt at a comeback, scoring one run in the eighth and two in the ninth before eventually falling 9-5.
Tyler Stultz (1-1) got the start for the Titans and went four innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits while striking out four and walking a career-high five batters.
Connor O'Halloran earned the win for Michigan to improve to 2-0 on the year after giving up two earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched while striking out six.
Game 2
Fullerton looked to immediately respond in game two as it jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Carter White got the Titans on the board in the second inning with an RBI single to center field to bring home Maddox Latta.
Zach Lew put the Titans up 2-0 in the third inning on a single up the middle to score Connor from second base.
From there the Wolverines scored seven unanswered runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings to jump out to a 7-2 lead.
The Titans added one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Lew to drive in Connor. Connor had another strong game for the Titans, going 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk.
Trevor Hinkel (0-1) started on the mound for the Titans and was cruising through three innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six. Hinkel would end up going 4.2 innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits while striking out eight and walking one.
Chase Allen (1-0) earned the win for Michigan after giving up three earned runs in eight innings of work on eight hits while striking out 10 batters.
The Titans look to salvage the final game of the series Monday evening. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. PT.
